If missions are your thing then doing the Sisters Of Eve Epic Arc, The Bloodstained Stars would be a logical step. It starts off in Arnon and will take you through all four races space over 50 missions, don't be afraid to ask for help from others if you need it, some of it can be quite challenging for a newbie, especially the penultimate mission.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

EVE is a sandbox, go do what you like.

As for missions, Jita wouldn't be a great spot cause of the heavy traffic, congestions and suicide gankers.
Pick a system with lots of agents around to run missions for.

In truth, having a "home base" is not that important, especially in the beginning.

Basing out of Jita has its own problems, in my opinion, mostly because this system occasionally "closes up" due to maximum residents, meaning you might not be able to enter it.
Then again, Jita is the main trading hub in Eve, so this is the logical place to buy or sell your stuff. Of course, this tends to attact all kinds of gankers as well, so in its own way, Jita is the most dangerous place in Hi-Sec (check the "Ships lost" or "Pods lost in the last 24 hours" filter on your starmap to get a picture).

As you want to run missions, your "base" should primarily be a system that has many agents of your class that you can run missions for, preferably in the same station, ideally with a repair shop and clone bay.
Also keep in mind, though, that you eventually want to "upgrade" to Level 2, 3 and finally 4 agents, most likely making it necessary to move each time.
Once you have access to level 4 agents, other factors for a "home base" in which to run missions are - besides the above mentioned factors - a certain closeness to a trade hub to sell your loot/minerals if you decide to loot/salvage your missions as well as being somewhat out of the way.

Be aware that your starmap has a filter for "Your available agents" as well so this might be a good start (the bigger the green dot, the more available agents reside in this system).

Solid advice.

And although you may have heard this before, it warrants repetition: Unlike other games, Eve is not all about feeding you quests for fun/profit. It's one feature out of many, doesn't lead anywhere in particular, and holds no special importance. So when you get bored of these missions, remember that there's a LOT more out there.

Although for now, it is a good vehicle for getting to know the game, and getting some starting income. And at any time, you can venture into something different. The market, for example, has no barriers to entry, and is a great way to make money.

And if you can find a corp that'll take a newbie, then that's great. Corp-mates are one of the best ways to learn, to try new things, go new places, and it provides a safety net. After the SoE arc, I'd make finding a corp a priority if I was in your shoes. Don't be afraid of jumping in blind, and don't be afraid to quit the corp either. There's some trial and error involved in finding the group and activities that are right for you.

Good luck.

There are some good suggestions and commentary here in this thread. You ask about good bases. I'd say that really depends on a whole multitude of factors that usually relate to how & where you want to play eve. Arguably more importantly, and down the same line of thought- i'd strongly suggest early on organizing your supplies.

It's terribly easy to end up with items and supplies messily stashed in stations all over New Eden as you travel over your career. You can get to the point where its nearly unmanageable and you start forgetting where you left stuff (fortunately there's a search feature).

In light of this i'd suggest having a small (3-4 ?) collection of caches and perhaps one or at most two two centralized 'bases' where you keep the majority of your stuff. Having these primary bases near a major trade hub can be convenient.

Lastly, make it a point to choose stations with medical facilities as your "home" or primary base from which you operate.

Step 1. Find a corp to join and use their base as your base of operations.

I'm also a new Caldari capsuleer. Running the SoE arc now, and mixing that up with running security missions against pirates for my corp. Making most of my isk through salvaging. I haven't moved my home base from the School of Applied Knowledge yet, but I did move all my insustrial mats and mining frigates a few star systems over to an NPC corp's manufacturing plant. The one in Todaki was always queued up so I couldn't build anything. I'll probably move my home base to my new corp's HQ once I'm a member in full standing. Plan on doing some exploration once I have the isk to properly fund it.
