They mean the same.

The USA version seems to be more "i could care less, but i dont/wont/cant"
The UK version more "I literally, am incapable of caring any less"

my 2 pence guess...

Nope.

No mainstream writing style guide (AP, Chicago etc.) or its authors would ever endorse, "could care a less."
I don't know of any non-mainstream ones that do for that matter. But I'm not exempting the
possibility that grammar radicals exist.

I could care less - means what it says.

I couldn't care less - also means what it says.

This is not a signature.

Ok i have no idea how to make a poll about this topic, but i think it needs to be done.

1) - I COULD CARE LESS

or

2) - I COULDNT CARE LESS

Im goin number 2, because really, if you COULD care less, it means you actually care ?

1. If you're a Yankee.
2. If you're a Rebel (in the South we use double negatives).

Every time someone says "and that's a fact!", science kills a kitten.

Edit: On an only slightly related note, what is with the auto-correct trying to correct "it's". If something belongs to "it", then that thing is "it's", not "its". That drives me mad.

Pretty sure it's couldn't...

Although I have got no idea what I just poked my nose into... I'll take an option two while we're at it...please?

You are incorrect

It's = contraction of "It is"

Its = belongs to it

I'm afraid this is one of those times when Ingleesh is counter-intuitive.
