5 day free offer, reluctant to return to EVE Online

I'm an old player and quit playing long time ago. CCP sent out offers for 5 free days, and I want to use that opportunity to explain why I feel reluctant to start playing EVE again.

I like small scale PvP, that's my thing. Carebearing is kind of fun but it gets boring fast. Large scale PvP feels like complete drag, tried it, can't find the fun in it. This game used to offer a lot of opportunities for small scale fighting, but as it progressed, the game focused shifted from small to large.

For example, I used to like roaming 0.0 and trying to catch a few people as they traveled somewhere, while avoiding large gank squads. Then new game features were added, most people stopped using 0.0 star gates unless they were with a gank squad, started using jump bridges. Capitol ships were added and it created a class of "untouchables" that could completely ignore small scale PvPers, just can't do anything to them. Cyno baiting became more common, to the point where you think you finally found a small scale fight only to be jumped by large gank squad. 0.0 intelligence networks and jump bridges evolved to such extent that nearly everyone in 0.0 knows about you coming from 15 jumps away and can easily outmaneuver you with jump bridge network. Can't even disrupt their trade with empire, it's all done with near-100% security by design

Pretty much everything in this game is designed to favor large groups and discourage small groups, as if having more ships wasn't advantageous enough.

Empire wars in high sec are an option, but its kind of limited with the amount of targets and the costs. No point in war dec'ing large alliances since they don't bother with high sec. Ganking carebear corps is only fun for a short while. Most of the time the problem is that it's too hard to get targets that aren't large gank squads.

So what is there to do for a small scale pvp guy? Is this game really worth coming back to?

Its still pretty easy to find small scale pvp in every aspect of eve. You can catch carebears in wormholes, there's fights to be had in lowsec, and you can do exactly what you did before catching people in nullsec. Its not that hard to find small fights, just sit down for a little while and try to think about what it is exactly that you want to do, and then do it. Just because there are giant blobs in nullsec and lowsec doesn't mean that its the only form of pvp there. Also, what do you consider "small scale pvp" i'm assuming you mean between 2-16 person fights?

Hmm, 5 years.

Wormholes, factional warfare, and Red vs Blue might be up your alley.

Unfortunately, the comments that you made about 0.0 hold true more than ever. But there are exceptions. With the right crew in the right wars, you may be able to find "good fights".

I'd recommend diving into some wormholes at the very least, they are the best content that Eve has at the moment. Content wise Apocrypha has blown away every expansion before and after. There's no local, no way to use jump freighters and other such nonsense to skip logistics, and if you retreat and bail from your system... well you may have a hard time ever coming back.

This. Wormholes are pretty fun. You can find fights in them, and they are a great way to make isk to buy more ships to pvp in.

Definitely wormholes, challenging PvE and plenty of small to medium scale PvP because access to them is limited by mass, people can't just come in through a gate with a massive fleet and hot drop you. The defenders do have a slight advantage, their ships are already in there.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Hey OP, I just took the same offer. I have been away for years but still have some old friends here to show me the path. Give FW a burl. It seems to encourage skirmishing like we had back in the day.

I just recently came back on that 5 day free offer myself. Yes, the game hypnotized me again.....renewed my sub starting with the special for 2 months for $19.95. Right back in the saddle with my old corp mates after a 2 and 1/2 year break.

Before I had left we were in wormhole space (a C3 if I am not mistaken) with our pos just reaping the rewards of the resources there (Planetary, Sleeper sites, rare ores, gas clouds, moon goo, etc). Best part was the PvP. It was, as stated before, small skirmishes as the WH had a mass limit...no hot drops, cyno fields but good small gang pvp. Made quite a few friends pvping in that wormhole.

I haven't ventured into a wormhole since I have been back....yet!

Try it out, 5 free days....you either come back or you don't....nothing lost.
