I'm not sure if this is the place to put this, but the known issues link is giveing me a 404 error.

I had problems with frame rate issues with gas clouds and debris slowing the game down dramaticaly and they looked like crap. I searched for fixes and found a lot of old forum posts where people complained about the problem but I never saw a solution posted beyond zooming out, and the threads were closed permanantly. I was going to post about the problem, but before doing that, I figured it was best to get everything updated and everything in order to save time having people tell me to update drivers and dust out the vents.

I solved my problem not by updating the drivers, but by doing a full uninstalation of existing drivers and related software (I don't normaly do this except once before when I had some crashes). I used driver sweeper to clean up old data after uninstaling the drivers and the software managing them, and then did a full update.

When I started up the game and took it for a test run, not only were there no frame rate issues, but all the clouds looked much more detailed as did the ships and everything else. I can only conclude that things weren't being rendered properly before which resulted in 1:)things looking like crap and 2:) FPS drop (frame rate) slowing down the game.

To summarize the fix:Completely uninstall old drivers and related software (I use AMD so this would be the catylyst control center), use software to clean up remaining data after install (I use driver sweeper) before updating to the latest drivers.

I use 2 AMD Radeon HD Mobility 5xxx's, but the principle should work for Nvidia and other cards. I hope this helps anyone still haveing problems, it is a fix but there could be many different factors that lead to the same problem.
