Cursor focus when using "merge ships and items"

I'm not sure if there is a solution to this, but I've been unable to find one. I have "Merge ships and Items in station panel and every time upon docking, the cursor focus jumps to the "search" box for the ships. This is overly annoying when I happen to be replying/talking in chat at the time of docking. Am I missing a setting to stop this? If there isn't a setting (other than turning off the merge) coul it be looked at to maybe change it to not focus on anything and allow me to go back to using the spacebar to get back to my chat window? With the focus on search, it just spaces in the search window.
