Ship Faction Color Variations Dropped at Exploitation Sites

Here is an idea to satisfy two things:

Ship color variation.
Unique exploration drops.

Upon hacking a site they will drop uncommon items which can be used to convert a specific ship into the factional variant that will have the colors of said faction. So say you are in Mordu's Legion space and hack a site that drops an item to convert a Drake to a Mordu's Legion Drake, thus changing the color scheme . This increases the value and makes the ship more personal.

I think this is better than selling variants on the NEX store and better than being able to convert ships at will.

How would putting it in the NEX store be better (for the player) than putting it directly into the game?

That's like saying in a racing game "instead of unlocking these new paint schemes I wish I could just pay for them in the in-game store."

If you make such things farmable would the value not decrease to the point where its barely worth it?
