Advanced Drone Interfacing 4 or 5?

I was wondering how many extra drones are allowed at each level so that I may know if I need to train to Level 5 or not? For example, if I have Advanced Drone Interfacing to Level 4, then does that mean I can use 4 Drone Control Units (DCUs)? I wasn't sure if I was automatically allowed an extra drone per level or not. It's the wording in the skill description: "extra"... that throws me off. Level 1 = 1 or 2 drones?

Hard question to ask correctly... thanks for your help.

Each level of advanced drone interfacing means you can use one drone control unit. Note that they can only be fit on carriers and mother ships though. So, for example, if you are flying a carrier and you have that racial type of carrier trained to 4, then you can launch 9 drones by default (5 base + 1 per level of carrier skill). Then if you have advanced drone interfacing trained to 3, you could fit 3 drone control units, so you could launch a total of 12 drones.

Let me see if I understand correctly....

  • By EVE default I have a base of 5 drones. Base = 5 drones.
  • I have Minmatar Carrier 5. Minmatar Carrier 5 = 5 drones.
  • I have Advanced Drone Interfacing 4. ADI 4 = 4 DCUs = 4 drones.

So, if I add those up, I should be able to pilot 14 drones. Big smile

In other words, each level of Advanced Drone Interfacing (ADI) lets me use one more Drone Control Unit (DCU), starting with 1 DCU at ADI L1. There is no real "extra" as per the skill description, or I just misinterpreted its meaning. So, as I understand it now, when using a similar number of DCUs... ADI L1 = 1 DCU. ADI L5 = 5 DCUs.

QUESTION:
My original question is really about whether it is worth training up to ADI L5. Given my skills detailed above, and the fact that I also have Fighters L5 and Fighter Bombers L5, is it really worth it to train to ADI L5? Question

Thanks,

Yep, that's right.

Only motherships can carry fighter bombers, so you might not end up making much use of that skill.

For a carrier, it depends what you want to do with it. Most carriers are used for rr and don't use any drone control units. If you're using it for missions or complexes it might be useful to have all your high slots taken up with drone control units, but not really necessary. The problem there is that many missions and complexes have gates that a carrier can't fit through. If you're planning on doing pvp, usually carriers focus on rr, so that takes up their high slots. That and neuts and smartbombs and maybe a triage module.

Correct. And as to if it's worth it or not, do you want to fly with nothing but DCUs in the highs? It's a very rare non-EFT Carrier that fits 5 DCUs. If you're not (or only rarely) going to fit a full rack of DCUs, then it's not worth it.

Don't train it to 5 unless you have nothing else to train.

I have it at 2.

I base the answer on your remap.

If you remapped for drones and have all the other skills to 5 then finish it off.
If your going to be training at anything less then max speed I'd sugget passing on it until you know you will need/use it.
