How would you divide ore into tiers?

Is there a firm official division into tiers? If not, how would you divide up the ores?

My best take on it is this:

  1. Veldspar, Scordite
  2. Pyroxeres, Plagioclase
  3. Omber, Kernite
  4. Jaspet, Hedbergite, Hemorphite
  5. Gneiss, Ochre, Spodumain
  6. Arkonor, Bistot, Crokite
  7. Mercoxit

I originally had only six tiers, combining the first four ore types into a single category, but pyr and plag doesn't occur in the belts in very high sec sites such as 1.0 and 0.9, so I split them out into their own tier.

Any feedback? Suggestions for improvement? Or have I basically got this right?

Ore generally is divided into the null/low/high categories of where its found. Nullsec will have all available ores, with types becoming harder to find as security rating increases. There is a faction-based separation as well, but its not as strict.

Veldspar / Pyroxeres / Kernite / Scordite / Omber / Plagioclase are all found in high security space.
Hedbergite / Hemorphite / Jaspet are low security space.
Arkonor / Bistot / Crokite / Dark Ochre / Spodumain / Gneiss are null security space.

To further confuse the issue ore is capable of spawning in anomalies (formerly grav sites) a little away from its normal regional or security status band.

To round this out - I don't believe that there's any real purpose in classifying the ores or tiering them. One could just as easily use the skill tree and time to train as a tiering method and it would have as much relevance.

Gotta chase the market. The only useful breakdown of ores into teirs is where it spawns. Ore value swings a fair bit, and isn't very well tied to spawn location. For instance, most valuable highsec ore today is Scordite, despite it spawning in any security status. Scordite is more valuable then Gniess and Spod, which are both 0.0 ores. The most valuable ore for regular mining (so not Mercoxit) is a lowsec ore.

Just gotta chase the market, no arbitrary tiering to rely on.

It takes whatever time your web browser takes to load a page plus about 5 seconds to figure out what the most profitable ores are to mine. Just click this link, its quite reliable:

http://ore.cerlestes.de/index.html#site:ore

As others have said, it is helpful to know which ores spawn in which areas of space. But trying to sort ores into tiers based on value is a waste of effort.

its pretty sure that ore tiers depend on the numbers of mineral types contained.
so it is:

tier 1: Veldspar, mercoxit
tier 2: scordite
tier 3: spodumain, crokite, dark ochre, arkonor, plagioclase, omber, kernite, bistot
tier 4: hedbergite, gneis, pyroxeres
tier 5: jaspet
tier 6: hemorphite

its time to nerf tier 3 ores. 50% of all ore are tier 3 .... Shocked

Image to ores

Best way is based on skills to mine and refine since these will also reflect their frequency and sec status availability and in most cases value.

1. Omber (it is such crap, it deserves its own tier)
2. Veldspar
3. Scordite, Pyroxeres
4. Kernite, Plagioclase
5. Jaspet, Hedbergite, Hemorphite
6. Gneiss, Ochre, Spodumain
7. Arkonor, Bistot, Crokite
8. Mercoxit (own tier because of low frequency of spawning)

Why is it necessary to divide it into tiers? Why make **** more complicated than it has to be...?
