Microsoft backtracks on XBox One policies

Reacting to "feedback from the Xbox community," Microsoft is appearing to reverse course and change two key components to policies for its new Xbox One video game console.

All disc-based games can be played without ever connecting online, and the 24-hour connection requirement has been dropped, according to an update to a May post concerning questions about the new device, due to be released this fall.

Additionally, there will be no limitations to using and sharing games, Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business division, says in the post. People will be able to share, trade or resell their games in the same way they do for Xbox 360 games.

The changes indicate Microsoft is having second thoughts about some of its future plans with the Xbox One. The post read, "Update on June 19, 2013: As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One reflected in this blog. Some of this information is no longer accurate."

After watching Microsoft repeatedly step on the ol' foreskin with the golf shoes, i never laughed so hard at watching them flounder.

Good to see that the community at large wasn't going to put up with their ****.

I'm still buying the PS4. Microsoft lost my business.

I think the XBone will still out-sell and out perform the PS4 simply because Microsoft has an expansive developer's network, and Sony has... they have... well Sony has.

Oh that's right they have a development kit only Sultan could afford and zero support at all.

Thank You Obama!

Funny, Sony's first party titles beat any of the first party and third party titles Microsoft paid to have.
Killer instinct made by the worst developers of 2009-2010-2011.
What a joke, they should give it back to Rare.

And they took out all of the fun out of Dead Rising and made it into yet another gritty zombie apocalypse game. Wooo! Awesome >_>

As for the rest, almost all titles that come to Xbox Juan also come to PS4, and vice versa.
It takes a huge sum of money to make developers skip on another console, meaning more sales.

It's funny, because Don Mattick was theone who said, "If you want to play offline, buy a XBox 360."

And as soon as the Xbox is sold a billion times, they change the policy again and you can either throw it away or keep using it. Either way, they'll have your money.

Well, yes.

They had an interesting choice: either keep the developers and distributors happy and give Sony 80% of the market share this generation and then stand with zero developers and distributors for the next generation (and also risk being barred from sales in the EU), or make devs and distributors slightly unhappy but keep the market share and have enough developers even in the future.

…and by “interesting choice”, I mean “no choice”.

I wonder why MS decided to change so suddenly. The outrage wasn't a surprise and, with all the Steam users complaining about the Xbox One and how video game boycotts have failed in the past, I don't see why MS would listen now.

Sony didn't do anything surprising at E3. Sure, the no online passes thing was a bit of a surprise to us, but I don't think it was a surprise to EA given when they ended their online pass program.

But a change this sudden requires something to have surprised Microsoft. What was it ?

Were developers threatening to abandon the Xbox due to not being able to play their own game in their own country ?

Did a government look at MS planning to sell something can be turned into a telescreen (with added night vision) with just a software update, then at the recently reveal of how far NSA spying went, then decided to tell MS "We will not allow you to sell a spy device. Change the Xbone, or we slap an import ban on it".

Or was it something else ?

Eh… I don't know. That particular penny has yet to drop.

I haven't seen them go back on the ”must have kinect plugged in” requirement, but unless they want to miss out on every barrack in the in the world (and they've historically been quite popular there), that one will have to go as well.

Yeah, but the investors would have seen the **** storm and basically commanded them to change it. After all, if they get a whiff that they will be losing money because of something that can be changed, then they will make it change.

"kinect have to be turned on all the time"
"playing without net is not possible"
"it's hard to remove the harsh drm policy when we try to move forward to the bright future with cloud gaming"
"no region lock is not possible, we have to negotiate with all countries individually because of law differences"

Suddenly changes and microsoft trying to sell it as listening to the costumers while the reason is probably they failed hard at pre sales and market research predicted horrible numbers for them in the upcoming console war.

I just feel bad for the fans of xbone exclusive titles that they have to go through all this bull$#1t. If CCP would handle their loyal costumers as bad as microsoft does, Iceland would be a nuclear wasteland by now :)
