As Mr. Epeen said, websites like this are too easily manipulated. So I wouldn't take it too seriously, its all in good fun.

Seriously!

Some skank is now in first place by over 300 votes. Script much?

It sucks that someone with the best of intentions can spend the time to put a fun site like this one together, only to have it ruined by the sociopathic player base. Guys, are you that desperate to rank in the top ten?

You know something is wrong when Mr Epeen is in the top 20. I shouldn't even be in the top one hundred.

Why shouldn't you be up there? You have a nice pic. :)

Know what is funny, I didn't even add this character - someone else did. I wasn't planning on participating in the contest because...you know...I'd win. Cool

It's disappointing to see people abusing the system when the site was meant to be used for fun. Next update will likely put a IP-address based limit on the skip button and avatar matching will go back to being random rather than rating-based.

Currently, as you may have noticed, someone can easily skip all 1500 characters, and keep voting for the same character over and over again, or write a script to do it.

OK - I will let you in on a little secret. I know the person that is manipulating the rating of a character to #1. She is a very dear friend of mine and she didn't write a script. It is a browser glitch. She found it easily. It is not her toon however, it is another persons. So do not blame Braeda Darro.

Anyway, she decided to make a point that your web program for your website is borked. Your website is easily manipulated due to the very nature of your system. People were manipulating it from the start. Up voting their toons and down voting others. Look at Brit Green and Commissar Kate. They were in an up and down voting match.

One of the things that is wrong is that the same characters were popping up over and over again and others were not even showing up. How is that fair? Also, putting a skip button in is wrong. Allowing people to flip past and only vote for the character they liked.

It is cool that you created this website.

Maybe you should re-think how voting takes place or just remove voting entirely and allow people to just look at characters and make comments. Just a suggestion. :)

People in EVE are very competitive and they'll do whatever it takes to win. It seems to be the nature of the the player base.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread but I've refrained from posting until now as I wanted to see how things would pan out. My first instinct was that your website would cause some drama and it has managed that. It doesn't bother me that I was #3 a few days ago and I'm now somewhere near the bottom along with many great avatars, as I suspected this would happen.

What I find funny is that people would go to all this effort to try manipulate the results. The site is meaningless. There is no prize, no reward, no fame. It's just a fun little site which is viewed by a very limited audience and there is nothing to be gained by being #1. The fact people have gone to so much effort to manipulate something so insignificant is hilarious and depressing. Anyway, I hope you find a way to fix your site. It's a nice idea and I know many people appreciate the effort you've put in.

Girl you fine. Let the haters hate and the cheaters cheat.

On another note, it is entirely unfair to male avatars. I know from my own personal experience that if a male and female avatar are put up against the other, I'll click the girl no matter what. Because clicking the dude might make me question my own sexuality and I've already been to University.

She mentioned earlier that there isn't a way to separate the avatars by gender and would have to be done manually. Just took a look and there is a decent chunk of male avatars on the lists; go ahead and click them, it's unlikely to make you particularly fabulous!

Yes, and you did win when it did count Big smile I do also like the new look for Ariel Dawn. It is fun to see people switch up their avatars. I resculpted this character 6 or 7 times at the end of last year when the option became available. By the last couple I noticed I was just flipping back and forth between very minor details and freckles that could only be seen in side by side comparisons so I think this will be it for now.

The most important thing is for you to like your character's look. We all have different traits that we find attractive and it is not surprising if the rest of the player base do not agree with you. I tend to go for the no cheekbone and a very dainty jawline look. I'm also a fan of noses and deep set eyes so Gallente/Gallente was an easy choice. I believe the female Sebeistor, Civire, and Achura features however, tend to be more popular amongst players.

I will be shutting the website down temporarily until the issue with people abusing the votes is fixed. Apparently some people just have nothing better to do than to submit HTTP PUT requests with the character IDs of a vote winner/loser.

Ha, vanity is interesting. I can imagine people messing up your site while at the same time declaring themselves "I AM THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS" while their eye twitches. Lol

this may be a generalization...but i think it's rather telling about the state of a persons life when they feel they must manipulate votes on a avatar contest site. i mean...really? lol you must be real fun to play board games with.

Nova, you may want to use a nonce generated for a particular comparison, with an expiration. When the winner is selected, PUT the win to a queue resource with the nonce. There are a few things you need to check to avoid abuse:

  1. Did you serve up the comparison?
  2. Is the vote corresponding a served comparison?
  3. Has the served comparison been skipped or voted on (invalidating the nonce)?

Make sure you do the tallying on the server side, not in your client code. Also, set a reasonable expiration on a candidate set (or the nonce that represents it).

Oh...you little bees will just never change.

Which part of "I will be shutting the website down temporarily until the issue with people abusing the votes is fixed." was too confusing for your tiny little bee brain?

What if you required people to register to vote? Another suggestion...what if votes were tied to the account that you registered with and once you cast a vote for a particular character - it disables the ability to cast another vote for that same character? Couldn't you do something like this to stop people from stacking votes?

I don't think people were actually abusing it (at least I didn't see major vote inflation when I looked at it a couple hours before it went down); being stateless was a pretty obvious flaw though.
