A short list:

Dark City - profoundly disturbing and thought-provoking. A hidden gem.
Sereneity - fan service, but a thoroughly enjoyable confection.
A Clockwork Orange - Mind-blowing when it first came out. I'd been a big fan of Brian Aldiss, but to see his vision brought to screen with Walter/Wendy Carlos' stunning and brilliant soundtrack. Perhaps the most unforgettable opening scene of any film I've seen.
Watchmen - Very well done. With dialog that blows PC away.
Alien - Ridley Scott outdid himself until we get to...
Blade Runner - the very best of P. K. ****'s works brought to cinema. Director's cut recommended. Rutger Hauer's improvised line towards the end was one of the most moving I've heard.

I'm sure that I could come up with more, but that's the short list.

Books that should be made into movies:

Ringworld
Any of Iain Banks' works based on the Culture series, but especially Against a Dark Background (RIP, Iain).
Davis J Williams' The Mirrored Heavens, The Burning Skies and The Machinery of Light

In my opinion, the top of the tops is definitely "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Excellent science fiction, and re-defined cinema itself in a way that cannot be copied without accusations of imitation.

Red Letter Media Reviews of Star Wars and Star Trek movies, are full feature length (~90 min) they are funny and poignantly observant. They are also therapeutic should suffering though the modern Hollywood blockbuster have left you in a stupor, feeling completely empty aside from regret.

As far as less popular atmospheric Sci-Fi - I remember liking Solaris (2002), Melancholia (2011) for Kirsten Dunst, Another Earth (2011) but I'd agree with many of the popular choices in this topic for "best".

I believe this thread proves that, although SF is still the rarest and most expensive genre to produce, when it does happen, it's really unusual for it to be bad.

I believe our next classic is the George Clooney/Sandra Bullock, Alfonso Cuaron Directed "Gravity".........
