i think i'm being downvoted on purpose. last i looked i was at 52% or something. so unless when my avatar gets rolled i'm going up against hardcore favorites almost everytime...then i'm being screwed with. because there are lots of very bad avatars on that thing.

i don't think i'm going to go back to that site. if i do i'll be tempted to just downvote everyone with a winning record over and over out of spite.

Hate to break it to you, but that's how voting works. It's a popularity contest, or something people do for ***** and giggles, but never anything actually serious.

I don't really know any situation or event where voting produced even halfway reliable results... Sorry CSM :P

Me too! it's ok though. i've noticed there is a definite bias towards the asian look. i will make an asian looking character and see how she does.

I've had the opportunity to up vote you at least 4 times and all of the Rains at least once. But the scores keep getting reset, or people are out to skew the results toward ugly-tars.

People like me, I guess.

I don't upvote the "purty mouthes", I give my vote to the most original character concepts- and often they are ugly as hell, but really funny to look at. If a picture makes me giggle, it always gets my vote over a boring spacebarbie.

But I have also discovered a pattern in my voting that only became apparent after voting several hundred portraits:

- less body modifications win over more
- open eyes win over sunglasses and goggles
- shirts win over shirtless
-close up wins over full body

I'm pretty sure my Achura alt didn't come out as well as Akirei. Jin-Mei and Sebiestor are the OP ones IMO.

Also, why is this dude not in the top 10? Because that's the best use of lighting I've ever seen. With a less bright moustache and slight re-positioning to align the light it would be perfect (though the zoomed portrait doesn't have the same effect).

the brightness range in the picture is very low. drama is about having full brightness and full darkness in the same image, with both gradual and abrupt transitions between full white to full black.

so the concept is good, but poor execution. a great example of full lights and darks is Altrue and Alpheias (imo). and of course, Rain6637 for whom I did the photography myself. *bows*

when you convert an image to greyscale, you can analyze it more easily in terms of brightness. in this comparison, Altrue (imo) is pretty -and- the balance between lights and darks is great. Alpheias is handsome too, but the image's light/dark balance is a little too dark. Rain6637's light/darkness balance is rather light, and lastly Adamant Stehl's image is far too dark.

also, Akirei, you know you're pretty freakin' hot. was that intentional? as in... are you an artist of any type?

I am literally the polar opposite of an artist. I am a programmer.

I make things that no one sees but have a practical use. Heh.

Though I guess programmers and artists have a similar reputation for being unkempt.

And regarding the linked portrait - never underestimate the effect deep shadows can have. That image was, in fact, the inspiration for my original goggles portrait. Sadly, that is 100% impossible to recreate since the lighting "fix". I tried.
