Typhoon to pve or not

I got a question, is the typhoon good at pve or does it only shine in the pvp aspect? I dont have any pvp experience and the next ship i want to train for is the typhoon, is it worth it if i am only going to be using it for pve, or should i consider getting some experience in pvp and then getting a phoon? If it is only good in pvp, how do i get started in the pvp portion of the game? sorry for the stupid questions but when it comes to pvp i am clueless as to what to do Sad

Early on I tried using it to run L4 missions. The shield tanked one did not work well. The armor tanked one worked alright.

It has pathetically small targeting range, something like 63 km so you will want sensor booster in mid (with script is nice) or sensor back up array (?) in low.

One way to setup a typhoon is cruise missile+sentry drones. 5 cruise missiles, some drone range augmenters, mid slots for utility mods and ab, low slots for tank, sentry drones and light scout drones. Light scouts to kill scram and web rats.

Unless you've got the skillpoints to make it shine, it's incredibly sub-standard as pve battleships go. Even for someone with sp, there are many more efficient alternatives. Of course, that isn't to say it's impractical or useless at the role, but if you're new (sounds like the case) I would set your sights on something more forgiving like a maelstrom for missions.

thanks both of you for the replies and insight, ye i am fairly new i only have 10mil sp totoal Sad so i got a ways to go before i even jump into a phoon but from what both of you are saying it is not a very good pve ship, not impossible just not the best, i am currently flying a mael but i was just looking at possible alternatives thank you both for the feedback guess i will stick to the mael for now Big smile

If you want to try it, try doing some easy missions where there are few rats.

Gone Berserk is not too easy, but it has nice predictable triggers, no gates, you warp in at a distance you like, warp to 100 km and wait for rats to go after you.

The one with slavers, where you destroy building and take slaves out of the can, has a few rats, should be easy enough.

I agree with Nimrod Nemesis.

The Typhoon can do great in pve but unlike other battleships it demands high skill points.

The Temp/Mael will do much better with alot less skill points.

If you pick a maelstorm a good pve build is.

x8 1200's

x1 XL SB
x2 rat damage type harders
x1 Inv
x2 TC

x3 Gyro
x2 PDU

x3 CCC rigs


I got BS5 do i have no real need for a shield amp but you might wish to put one on and remove a TC.
The PDU`s just give a nice boost to shields pg and cap.

The ship is not cap stable but the ship recovers cap fairly quick and since it recovers so much hp a cycle with its dps you will not need to use it much if you control argo.

If you go with 800's for angel rats you might want to remove a TC and put a AB will make it so much easyer to move around.

Drone are up to you.

If your with angel just load the phoon with an armor tank and AB in mid and use 5 800mms with 3 siege launchers and a flight of berserkers(its ok cus angel rats are so close) If you got t2 torps or just the missile range skills at V/V or IV/V you can use 5 torps and 3 800mms. WIth all drones and a 5/3 setup youll get like 1000 dps ad its easy verse angels.

Phoon is not really the best minnie PVE boat unless you're talking nul sec belt ratting, at which point it kills faster than a tengu.

Typhoon is terrible at PVE. Use a Maelstrom.

The cool thing about the Typhoon is that with high skill points and not a lot of isk you can make your ship do incredible things. Usually PvP things, but you can do PvE things too.

At 10mil SP I can assure you that you don't have the skill points to make a Typhoon shine. Avoid the Typhoon for now.

Thanks to all that have replied, i am def. not ready for the phoon yet was just looking at it as a ship for down the road. ill stick with my mael and work for the phoon when i eventually get into pvp thanks again for all of the feedback

Go for a Maelstrom. I moved into one of those for mission running when I had around 10M sp, and that's STILL what I use with 23M sp and counting. In my opinion, the Mael is one of the top L4 mission boats out there.

I'm currently training up my armor skills (I've always shield tanked) to run an effective PvP phoon, but it'll be a few days before you see me in one.

Get your T2 shield tank, then move into T2 guns if you're going to be running missions mostly. T2 autos are the s*** for L4 missions!

i havent done any lvl 4s yet kinda worried about losing my mael. not a very wealthy personSad would you mind posting your fit so i can get an idea of a working and successful fit? i have t2 shields and i am almost done with t2 guns Smile

You want a gun setup? The Tempest has the same amount of turrets and does everything better.
You want a mixed setup? Forget about it, it will gimp your ship inot oblivion.

Nonetheless, Tempest and Raven surpass the Phoon greatly in PvE- perfomance since they have both boni dedicated to their specialized weapon system, whereas you can fit the Phoon either for guns or for missiles and will thus forfeit one bonus....... and, yes, fit one less weapon.

Problem is if you use guns then tempest/maelstrom do it better. If you use missiles then you could just use a raven which does similar dps without having to use heavy/sentry drones.

Soooo many wrong replies in here

People are correct that you need alot of SP to fly a phoon well

If you shield tank and fit a bunch of both missile and turret dmg mods you can get a beast at PVE with over 1200 dps and a strong tank

Good luck applying that torp dps you're talking about. You won't get that EFT dps on anything less than a bloated shield bs unless you fill your mids with painters (oh, you're shield tanking?) and/or invest in some launcher rigs (good luck finding cpu for that).

It's a fun ship and can perform admirable feats for its bargin price, but quoting eft dps and calling it a pve beast just lets the rest of us know you have no idea what you're talking about.
