Im about to start paying for a remote server in order to host my own websites, coms, forums, jabber and all those other lovely goodies that people provide.

What would be the best operating system to use on the remote server?
My options are:
Debian 6, 7
CentOS 5, 6
Ubuntu 11, 12, 13
Fedora 16, 17, 18
FreeBSD 8, 9
ArchLinux
ProxMox
Citrix Xen Server
VMWare
Server 2008 Enterprise
Or possible custom option

What would be the best control panel?
cPanel / WHM Add $ 25.00 per month
DirectAdmin Add $ 15.00 per month
Plesk 30 Domains Add $ 10.00 per month
Plesk Unlimited Domains Add $ 25.00 per month

Please dont reply with comments such as 'rent from someone ingame' or 'dont bother since you dont know what you are doing'. Constructive advice only please.

Thanks in advance.

Debian 7 is a good solid operating system and is better for websites and stuff However Server 2008 is better for usability :D. Also you dont need the following if its only for you and you dont plan on reselling hosting.
cPanel / WHM Add $ 25.00 per month
DirectAdmin Add $ 15.00 per month
Plesk 30 Domains Add $ 10.00 per month
Plesk Unlimited Domains Add $ 25.00 per month

Hope This Helps and i can set it up/help you with it if you need it :D,
You know you can talk to me ingame haha :D

I'm a fan of Centos for this kind of thing.

However, the right one to pick, really, is the one that you're most comfortable with, which supports the software that you're wanting.

Pretty much any of the linuxes would cover you. You will need to get comfortable with it, however. Unless you want to get hacked. You'll need to keep all the software up to date.

As long as you're comfortable doing this, then have fun Smile

CentOS 6 is my personal favorite. Just go with what you are the most comfortable with. If you are just starting to use linux I'd recommend either CentOS or Debian.

For the control panel, I personally use cPanel, but it's mostly because I have clients on it. If I wouldn't have any clients to manage I would've installed every softwares myself as I find that it's a lot more efficient and easier to manage on a smaller-scale.

Just to explain why people are suggesting Centos:

Centos is Redhat, which is pretty much /the/ commercial release of Linux. Someone just stripped the trademarks and released it for free (which is entirely legal. And as they're not making any money on it, Redhat are fine with it. They like people getting used to the way they do things)

It might not be as user friendly as some distributions, but it's definitely aimed as Administrators.

Troy Aihaken - I do intend to make ISK off this once I am fully set up.

Steve Ronuken - Im not overly comfortable with any of them but will do what I need to to get used to whichever I end up using. Personally Id probably ending up using a windows system since Im a noob but I was warned that may not do all the things I need it to (I will explain what exactly I need in a moment).

Manhim - As above. I have no real experience with any of them. Same goes with the control panel.

What I need the server to do is basically host ALL the eve related products that are used by alliance (mostly found in Eve-O forums) but also programmes such as mumble/TS3, Jabber and all those other goodies. Off the top of my head, I would be looking for:
Alliance Website,
Forums,
Killboard,
Coms,
Jabber,
API Security,
POS Tracker,
RF Timers,
Mining Buddy,
These would also include EVE specific add-ons such as the fitting panels in fprums etc.

There will also be unrelated-to-eve websites hosted there aswell if all goes to plan.

Well, the first thing I'd do is run a virtual machine on my computer and play with them.

I have fooled around with windows alot and with UNIX based systems. And it is basicly pretty simple. If you want a easy to work with environment that you already partially know, take windows. It is not as fast as a UNIX based system.

I myself use Ubuntu for all my server stuff simply for the fact I know it learned and love it. It is pretty easy to find the support you need and a really helpful community around most UNIX distributions.
A UNIX based server is also alot quicker then a windows server based.

Short answer: yes, pretty much (as long as either the source code or binaries of what you want to install are available for your platform). Safest bets are Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS.

Or if you want ease: Windows Server, but I'm not sure if any of these panels works on Windows.

All of the control panels were offered to me w/ windows server so i would imagine they do have a Windows version.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
Much appreciated
