LOL Wow! Thanks, everyone! You all gave excellent responses, and opened my eyes to what I should expect when I strike out for low sec and even null sec space.

Actually, that's what you should expect, period.

Hardest lesson to teach is that undocking gets you killed.

If you're driven to threaten others with harm or violence because of what they do in game, you can't separate fantasy from reality. That "griefer/thief" is probably more sane than you are. How screwed up is that?

I'm new to EVE, so I don't know if claim jumpers are viewed in a poor light or whatnot. I was mining an asteroid, and some other miner started mining the rock I was on. Is that considered bad manners?

In other games it's considered bad manners to gather resources someone else is working on, but this is EVE, where even piracy is encouraged, and thus the question is posed.

I tried to message the miner, but was refused communications.

What should I make of all this?

I've seen wars started over this. Yes, really.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is, there are asteroids everywhere, but then I don't mine very often.

F**k you and excuse the rant/roidrage. EVE is a sandbox.

When I mine I am don't give a damn about if you are mining from a from a rock in space. My sole purpose is to gather as much resources as possible in a short a possible a time and if that means I am mining from the same rock as you, then go call the waaaaaaaaambulance or something. As far as I am concerned it is just PvP in another form (save the blatantly obvious one of shooting at other players).

Besides, have you paid your mining fee?

May I suggest that you stop taking the steroids.

Sted-head rage is just so sad.

It's considered PvP, just like pretty much everything in Eve. Gank him, wardec him, bring 100 hulks and mine the entire belt out from under him.

Skimmed thread a bit and sad to see no James 315 voicing his opinion here on mining etiquette Cry

He can't be everywhere himself but OP has been briefed about the Code by one of the representatives of The New Order: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3181125#post3181125

get into another ship fly back and bump him until he leaves the belt. according to CCP rules you can contnually bump him if he stays in the system but if you follow him to a new system to bump him then it is harrassing.

Or just get into a cane or typhoon and blow him to heck

Didn't see anyone asking if it was fair. Fairness and rudeness are different things. I could deliberately knock your kid's icecream out of their hand and then claim "life isn't fair" but I'd still be rude to do it.

To the OP: When miner "pvp" happens, cycle your lasers faster than they do so you get more of the harvest than they do, or just go to another belt.

I had some guy come into a DED I had scanned down and ran most of. The dread gurista commander spawns and I get jammed from targetting. WHile I am waiting for the jam cycle to end this guy flies up to the Dread Gurista kills him, and takes the loot. Then talks trash in local afterward.

He said he got 55 million from it. While 55 million is paltry when I ran the next site and got an A type shield booster that sold for 300 mill, it was the principle. Now is THAT frowned on? Not much I could do while being jammed.

Do people actually take the time to zoom in on the rocks they are mining to see if anyone else's lasers are already on it?

Mining is boring. Look at overhead for rocks. Drop t1 drones to deal with rats. Check map overlay to determine best cluster of rocks (and to create bookmarks.) Start chewing on the rocks that have enough minerals to fill your hold before warping back to station to drop ore off. (Yes, this is a Mack-centric example.) Alt-tab out and set timer/reminder.

At no point would you zoom in enough to see someone else's lasers.

OP, this isn't precisely considered "rude" as such. But what's considered rude and what isn't, is entirely up to you. If you want to tolerate it, do so. If you want to just swap rocks, do that.

If you want to kill him for it, well, by all means, do that too.

That's the beauty of a sandbox game.

No, it is not frowned upon.

In fact, that kind of clever use of other people's labor is to be applauded.

You know whats rude? My Son has yet to come and visit me today. I waited fer him out front because this is the day he typically comes to pay the bills but its so hot out I couldn't do it fer long. This heat is pretty bad ya know, but where I am at now is better than it stormin all the time like it were last month. Last time he came in to pay the bill he snuck out like I wasn't even here! I learned about it from Janis the Nurse and I tell you what I was quite annoyed!

But the boy might have an excuse to why he didnt stop in and say hello I guess. The last time he did that he had some car problems and his boss drove him over to get the bills payed. His boss is a nice guy, his father and I used to play Gold from time to time.

That's what I do when I do when doing college school work.

And yes OP, if some one deliberately mines your rock, repercussions should be delivered.

Just get a fast ship and bump them over and over out of range, the tears will be worth much more then the isk/hour.
