What to look for in a stretch of low-sec?

Let us say that I want to find a stretch of lowsec in which to cut my teeth soloing with some cheap frigates. What should I look for in such a region? How might I find those things?

Some of the things that I am thinking of are average population, whether it is a pocket of low-sec surrounded by high-sec (although I'm not sure how to identify that, really), and size of the available space to roam.

Or does it matter? Should I just hop in to an area at random, start setting up bookmarks, and see how it goes?

The later method would probably be as good as any for getting started.

If you wanna look into things more try using DOTLAN maps to get a better idea of which systems have action and how much of it.

The problem with using a frigate to pvp in low sec is that in most of it there aren't any targets for a frigate.

As in all no-FW regions most of the fights will happen on a gate or station (as no-one mines or rats in low sec) you need to be ready to take gate guns. Frigates just can't handle them.

You can try to look for blinky pirates, but most of them will be able to handle a frigate.

In the faction warfare areas you will find a lot more people in small ships and away from any gate or station guns, however with the state of FW right now, most of them will be either in ceptors / bombers running missions, or in pirate / navy frigates looking for a fight.

There's still quite a lot of rifters looking for a fight so it would be a good place to start.

For cutting your teeth in frigs specifically;

Join RvB
Attend Agony Unleashed classes
Maybe attempt some 0.0 (but there is a whole mess of things that makes this more complicated).

As the other duders said, in low-sec frigs are problematic. You will need your target to shoot you first. The big problem with this is that most people in low-sec who shoot other people (and are criminals, YARR) do so with the knowledge that they gates will shoot at them, so they fly ships which are capable of withstanding guns.

20k EHP is a good _starting_ point for pewing in low-sec _with a gang_.

That said the best advice really is this, I'm some mong yabbering on the EVE-O forums so don't worry too much about the BS I spew. Go out and find out for yourself. Remember to fit cheap, including implants, make sure your clone is up to date and engage.

My current homebase is located in Dodixie and when I have time for a little fun (which unfortunately is hard to manage these days) I set destination to Hevrice and just go there in my rifter. This sector and other in the neighborhood is where Tuskers hung out and if you stay on their radars long enough usually somebody will come out to greet you :)

It is true that most of ships you can see there can be defficult to take with a rifter or any other frig and what is worse pilots are experienced but if you want to learn you should take lessons from the best not from mediocre.

What are your short term goals to learn?

If you are looking to get comfortable flying through Low sec and learning how to find targets and avoid getting blown up you will probably be ok parking in any lowsec regions.

Actually learning how to frig fight with 1v1's etc you might be better with the RvB option.

I've often resorted to shooting at 2+ T2 / pirate frig gangs because no T1 frigs are around to shoot at in the region I roam about. This leads to allot of neadless deaths, but I've justified it to myself by trying to do better each fight. Even if that means learning when to disengage when my tristan is about to burn out it's AB trying to plink a vengance with rails.

In my opinion, there is alot to be learned about hunting low sec in a frigate such as learning what to engage, weaknesses of your ships compared to other ships gangs, dscan usage for target finding ( and how to hide ), running gate camps, and other stuff generally related to reducing the impact of adreniline on your fighting capabilites ( i.e. reducing the impact of the 'shakes' :P ).

If you are looking for a broad education, use DOTLAN to look for areas with high NPC kills and Jumps, daily ship losses on a killboard such as Eve-kill or Battleclinic in your time zone.

No matter where you go, your mindset will shift from 'how not to die' to 'how the heck do I kill those guys with what I got'. From here the journey changes.

I haven't found that T1 frig PvP nirvana yet, so if you or someone else has, let me know where to steer my poorly fit merlin.

EDIT: Criteria I used was -
Roaming distance to a Null sec pocket
Close access to multiple Regions ( 15 or so jumps or less )
I looked for FW activity initially but that might have been a bad idea
I also tried to find a large contiguous block of Lowsec, I wanted to be able to fly 30 or so jumps without ever hitting highsec if I wanted.

All that said, the area I ended up in has not been all that active for T1 frig PvP options aside from the occasional opportunity and bomber interdiction in FW missions.

For good lowsec frigate combat, look no further than static DED sites (1/10 or 2/10). These are sites which you can spot on your overview and warp to without any scanning. Because DEDs offer some nice loot drops such as faction afterburners and faction ship blueprints, they are often camped or watched by players willing to fight for the opportunity of farming the site.

The important thing to know about DEDs is that they have acceleration gates which will only allow certain categories of ships through (if i remember correctly DED 1s only allow frigate class ships (T1 / T2 / Faction all included) through the gates and DED 2s allow frigs and destroyers).

In other words, if you pick the right class of DED (i.e. DED 1 or 2) and can get through the first acceleration gate (which is sometimes camped by bigger ships) you are guaranteed not to have a decloaking falcon / rapier / blob appear next to you because the gate will only allow smaller ships through. This makes for a very "arena" type of pvp experience and is a good place to start.

I found a lot of fights travelling from DED to DED through lowsec. Of course an additional benifit is that if the site is not camped / has not been farmed recently you might well pick up a faction drop and could earn some decent isk or improve your fitting.

You can find DED sites either by taking a look on something like Ombey's 2d Maps (also useful for determining lowsec pockets) or Dotlan. I prefer Ombeys simply because they are printable and I like holding a physical piece of paper when navigating.

You should remember however that the average frigate that you find at a lowsec DED isn't really that "average". Expect decent pvp pilots, usually in faction fit faction frigates who know how to use the site, warp mechanics and gates to their advantage. Usually you can get a pretty darn good fight out of them and if you manage to kill them, you will likely get one or two valuable pieces of loot.

Regarding lowsec generally, don't believe all the negative hype about the lack of targets for frigate pilots in lowsec. It simply isn't true. There are plenty of targets for frigates in lowsec. Sure, you won't be able to engage neutral targets on gates, but then again, there are plenty of non-neutral targets in lowsec. In addition, despite what some people might say, there are in fact people ratting, mining, hauling and mission running in lowsec - you just have to be patient enough to find them.

Good luck!

You're Minmatar so I'm going to assume you live down there/here.

So first off we have the ever popular Eifer entrance to Evannater constellation. Now for someone new to low-sec I'd avoid this entry to this low-sec constellation as its usually watched quite closely. Edit - or it was, looks dead now. Better to go via Auren or Hrondedir.

Heading south we come to the Hed constellation, with the ever-popular Amamake. Again this probably isn't your optimal entrance, better to use Bosboger.

As to when you'll find people around, well as you can see from the linkies above, Dotlan is your friend.

I'll throw in behind join RvB. All the frigate teeth cutting you need, then after that head out for the real stuff.

If you have your heart set on pirating, I would again suggest finding some newbie friendly pirate corps (they do exist) you'll have the option to solo, but also the fleet roams will see you getting more action against targets you'd not normally be able to handle.

Finally FW is worth a look, there are solo frigate fights out there, and if your lucky, you'll get the jump on the mission leeching bears, as well as finding fights outside of the usual Station/Gate situation.

The area you want might depend on your timezone, because different pirate corps might or might not be active. Having said that here are some nice areas I've tried.

Right now I am in the Gallente/Caldari FW area near Aesche system. This area is full of pirate and FW corps, so usually you dont have to look for a long time before you get a fight, but you might also run into a blob. Aesche is pretty close to Arnon with the begginer epic ark, so you get the newbie trying out low sec for the first time. It is also centrally located if you want to roam towards Tama or the other way into Placid.

Another area is the Molden Heath. This region is a giant loop of low sec regions. Again you get lots of pirate corps and people who are trying to get into the Great Wildlands. Also there is a mission running system so occasionally you'll run into a mission runner looking for adventures.

Finally you can try Amamake and the Minmatar/Amarr FW area.

This is closer to true, however, if you know what your doing you can just stay away from said people and ask for a 1v1 in a frig. Frigs won't catch you on gates, so moving around in a frig is a good idea if you want to look for fights. Larger ships WILL get caught by gatecamps, with frigs you might survive.

Also, you should get in a corp with some experience on this stuff. If you don't, you will probably not understand why you are losing fights and what you need to do to fix it (you will lose, don't worry, its a learning process at first).
