Looking for graphics cards that work

Since Odyssey put my system over the edge of usability somehow, looks like I am going shopping.

I am interested in hearing the experiences of the Linux community regarding graphics cards that actually work with the current incarnation of Eve. I am asking here rather than on a more general forum because I imagine that Linux could have specific performance and driver issues.
Cards that can run the game with all the eyecandy that has been added in the last few patches are especially interesting.

As for my specific situation, apart from the graphics card, the rest of my system is rather up to date (i5-3570 CPU, 16GB RAM. Running (K)ubuntu.). I am not playing anything but Eve these days, major future-proofing should not be necessary.

I still use a 8500GT 512Mb PCI-E card with my Mint install. All settings are on minimum but it's fine for basic work, I've never tried large fleet fights on that machine.

A GTX650 2Gb PCI-E card can be bought for under $150, that would do the job on high settings.

I'm considering upgrading to that for general system reasons, not just for Eve.

Don't forget you'll need to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers after you've installed the card.

Basically any NVIDIA video card combined with NVIDIA's binary driver should work fine assuming it's your video card that is the issue and not lack of cpu or memory. ATI cards can be a bit hit or miss with new controllers.

NV645M here. NVidia proprietary driver. Works.

However.

NVidia binary driver for some reason always handled the actual desktop poorly for me. Namely, firefox scrolling was always horribad.

Now that I run an optimus laptop, I find it a blessing since I can leave the desktop to intel card and only use NVidia for demanding 3D.

I recommend at least somewhat current Nvidia GTX x60 for maximum visual fidelity, even though weaker cards can handle the game just fine in most situations. Personally, I am using an AMD Radeon HD 7950 v2. Eve runs smoothly at max. settings for the most part. Only larger encounters (like 200+ pilots or so) drop the FPS below 30. Turning off effects and shadows helps a great deal in those situations.

I got my ATI 5870 using Radeon Open source graphics fully working on the current version of Eve. I am using Ubuntu 13.04 with Xorg Edgers PPA.

CX Office 12.2 still crashes on CQ though.

<== nvidia user since MX440. With linux, I can't recommend them enough! Now I have a GTX560Ti and it works great.

I just threw my MX400 to the bin a few weeks ago. P

Good to hear that family still works mostly for Eve. Looks like I'm heading that direction, exact model depending on what kind of deals I can find on this rock here. Lol

Having the chance to directly compare, I also recommend getting an Nvidia card if it's purely meant for linux. The closed source Nvidia drivers for linux are quite a bit ahead of the AMD ones. AMD on the other hand has the far better open source drivers, but they are still crap for gaming on modern cards.

Eve runs fine on the $130 Nvidia card I bought for Eve 2-3 years ago when Incarna came out. That said turning on every option is problematic. Really what you want to be sure of it that you aren't maxing out your memory or cpu. I'd at least run top or something graphical like System Monitor. On my laptop I have problems with the current release when I try and use the launcher. Even if the launcher works it's often still running in the back ground sucking down an entire cpu. I find I need at least 2G per Eve client which makes dual boxing while watching hulu problematic on my 4G laptop... (Less issue on my 8G workstation.)

WineHQ has reports about general problems with the Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 570/580 so wouldn't get one of those.

Evga GTX460 with the Nvidia 319.23 driver.

I have a fruit cup and I'm not afraid to use it.

Ah, I should add that EVE actually works mostly flawlessly (minus CQ, as usual) on my 560Ti even with max quality settings, antialias, HDR, cache and all effects turned on.

And it's quick and reliable to revert to the all-performance (and zero effects) preset in case of ping for huge fleets...
