Hi, I have eve online working perfectly under Kubuntu 12.04 LTS.

I have it running full screen at 1920x1200 with Nvidia 560, using the latest propriety drivers. I was using this setup to install and play Steam games, i.e. counter-strike, team-fortress 2, so maybe that helped.

To install eve, I used the instructions from Kismeteer here,
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=172086

so I just installed wine, winetricks and alsa-oss

The differences being

1. Uses full screen instead of a set resolution
2. The executable is bin/EveFile.exe
3. I had a windows install of eve on the windows partitition (as I dual-boot windows/linux), so I just copied the files over to Linux, so did not need to download eve

What makes this perfect for me is that I need to do some work under Linux, so I have virtual desktops setup, 4 in total. and use hotkeys to switch between them, easily to set up in KDE.

When working, I just solo mine in eve, and there is no lag when switching between the virtual desktops, its instant. So I can happily code, browse, etc and also play eve without any delays. (be sure to switch off desktop effects for switching screens if you want this)

Maybe if your having problems with Ubuntu, Mint, etc maybe give Kubuntu a try.

GFX Nvidia 560

Kubuntu 12.04
KDE 4.8.5
wine 1.5

1. What's the purpose behind alsa-oss? I believe, wine has audio drivers for alsa, oss, pulseaupshhpspshhhaudio. Why wrapping it in aoss if you can work with alsa directly?
2. What's the important difference betweeen Kubuntu and the other *buntu distros in this regard? Apart from the window manager?
3. Do launcher and IGB work?

Dunno, maybe its not needed. But I do not have the eve sound on, as I have other background music on or silence when coding.

I think the unity compositor that does the desktop effects maybe causing some of the issues. In KDE the effects are suspended for full screen windows.

There is an oldish article here that compares the various desktops for Steam, which may provide further answers

3. Do launcher and IGB work?
Not using the launcher directly, but during an eve update, the laucher started and I could login fine. Whats IGB?

Ah. Not interested in fullscreen. I think I'll stay with openbox.

IGB seems to work, and the trusted site identified my current location correctly.
