This might be better in GD but ill try my luck here first.
Is CCP starting to regret the capsule concept?
It seems to me that after incarna they moved away from the idea of pilots stuck in a pod in favor of this matrix-like back of the neck plug-in thingy. Just look at the origins/Odyssey info trailers, they dont even mention the capsule let alone show it off.
Anywho, just something iv been wondering lately. Thoughts?

Yup. In the Origin trailer there are even couple of scenes from "inside the pod" (the flashy shiny thingies), not a single goo anywhere.

Personally I hope they will re-think all the capsule setup. Sci-fi with metal behemoths flying among stars needs visible crew. Bridge. People. Walking in ships. Seeing nebulas from your starship window. This is kind of stuff that is crucial for immersion. We will have to wait to see what future brings us Smile

I'm Caroline Grace, and this is my favorite musical on the Citadel.

To be fair i think that could of been a visual interpretation of what we see when plugged in. Because really if we saw inside the pod in flight. all we would see is a naked body, with wires, headcap (Might of moved on from that tech), and we would just be floating their in a sort of statis. Since everything that we see is being fed directly into our brains.

But i would have to disagree with your idea of basically being a captain on your starship on the bridge, That would be going against all what makes us capsuleers to being with and being immortal etc etc.

As far as i can remember the Caldari refitted capsule interiors with some monitors for visual input, because pilots found it very troublesome to have the visuals fed directly into the neural cortex. It was somewhere in the lore articles, but i can't find it right now.
And it has never been said what color is the pod goo exactly =]

update: found this incarna teaser trailer, there are no displays visible there, however, the exact color of the goo can't be determined as well, because the tank glass is tinted.

The plug-into-neck thing has always a part of the capsule's operation for as long as I have played; it is referenced in some early chronicles as well and also goes back to the description of the first capsule the Jovians gave to the Caldari (see The Jovian Wetgrave).

I also take the view Lordswift described above, that the trailer showed an "in-the-mind" representation of how a capsuleer might "see" as he flies his ship. The debate about whether the capsuleer "sees" himself sitting before a bunch of screens of information or actually takes a sort of deeper, metaphysical bond where the ship replaces the capsuleer's body sensations is a perennial one. I personally take the view that it might be a choice.

When I started this thread I realized that complete abandonment of the capsule idea was a silly notion to begin with. But it makes me wonder if when we eventually get a finished WiS system in the next decade or.. three.. it will be accompanied with a "upgraded / 2nd generation" capsule that simply doesn't have goo. I think most of us can agree that at very least the "goo" is a serious handicap in terms of lore potential. Taking the current WiS as an example, people always seem to wonder how you can leave a pod and be perfectly clean, tidy, and clothed in 2.3 seconds. Plus it would finally put an end to the "but I wanna walk around my ship n things!!1! :("
I do understand why we have it at the present time. But personally I would like to see the story head in this direction.

The comms image is an sort of avatar, residual body image , we project an image of how we see ourselves, which is why we are all beautiful or parodies.

I think you're reading way too much into meaningless scenes in a trailer.

You've been watching The Matrix too much. But i agree with the idea. As for why we all are beautiful - you're a filthy rich immortal, why can't you just pay an extra ISK to make your body look the way you like it?

Wasnt there small writing of how one Caldari pilot experienced being "in pod", he could see outside ship, he was ship, it was his body that he controlled. So I imagine while being in pod capsuler is in this liquid tank hardwired and floating. in trailer where she was looking at all fancy stuff happens in her mind, and then she looks outside into space and her ship. But if CCP changed original pod tec, I would love to know or someone link page of new info or story. I personally love original version as it is more "brutal" and less matrix style. Bear

The Burning Life mentions that agents have access to avatars in case they don't want to take our calls "in flesh", so to speak. The newbie threatening a planetary governor in that Planetary Interaction chronicle, in turn, used a gruesome "heavily augmented" avatar. So yes, to a degree those are customizable. This explanation does somewhat break if we're ever let out of the Captain's Closets.

The back of the neck plug has always been there. One of the earliest eve videos i watched showed a capsule opening and the capsuleer inside unfolding.

as for the 'screens' idea... the original tests tried putting screens and the like into the capsule, but that didn't work very well. also, capsuleers can be blind and still see the universe through their camera drones, so there is lore to say that the data is piped straight into the brain.

While before i watched that video, i remember thinking we were much like the 'brains' in the Pern universe books, capsuleers have always been able to disembark from their capsules. just not while outside a station.

Not indicative of corporate policy unless otherwise stated.

I do not believe the pod is much hinder to 'walking around ship'. we have crews, you will remember. they're not in pods. so logically, we can walk where they walk. For that matter I suppose we could use Andromeda-type 'avatars' to walk around the ship if needed.
And if you want a bridge crew...there's always Star Trek Online.

The capsule is still very much loved here at CCP.

The fast transition to captain's quarters is simply for game design reasons, and the use of the UI in the EVE Online: Origins trailer is to stylize it so that it's easily understandable by a wider audience that doesn't need to read 20 technical articles to understand a three second part of the trailer.

You're all still capsuleers, you're all still bathed in goo, and you're all still going to need a shower when you disembark.

Wait...I thought the nanites in the capsule cleaned, dried and clothed me in the few seconds it takes the capsule to fly from the ship to the balcony.

As you hopefully know, the capsule is filled with some liquid.

http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/short-stories/the-jovian-wet-grave/ wrote:
But he could still breath through his nose. He couldn't see and he couldn't hear. All he felt was this cold, sticky fluid all around him. He was inside the capsule! Pirkotan slowly ran his hands over the inner surface of the capsule. It was very smooth and Pirkotan found no seams or cracks, or any controls or buttons for that matter. The capsule was tightly closed and no discernible way to open it from the inside. Pirkotan was not normally claustrophobic, but now he felt panic rise within him and he wanted to scream and run. But he could do neither; the thick fluid hindered all fast movements and when Pirkotan opened his mouth it was instantly filled with the strange-tasting bluish liquid. Pirkotan was forced to swallow it so he could breath again. Pirkotan tried to calm himself down, but when nothing happened for what seemed like eternity he once again despaired. He had read about people being accidentally buried alive in olden times and now he felt like they must have; this capsule, this thing, felt like a wet grave, burying him. 'Is this the end?' Pirkotan thought. 'Maybe the machine has malfunctioned, maybe they can't get me out!'

So, probably, the capsuleer need take a shower after he is disembarked.

That was less enthralling than I hoped for. Especially cause I actually knew all that, and just wanted to have it explained in, you know, 'detail'. :p
