Gate Guns and who they target

Situation: My friend and I were out on a roam. We encountered two people jumping through the gate (they were flashing to us) and our overveiws are set up in accordance with the E-Uni overview guide. We killed one ship and were in turn killed ourselves by his/her friends. On the kill mail we see that a gate gun is included in the damage.

My question is, will gate guns engage anyone who isn't in good standing with that particular faction? Does us being neutral have anything to do with the gate gun partaking in the kill?

TL/DR why did the gate gun participate in what we thought was a fair fight?

Thanks

Whoever you shot wasn't an outlaw.

I assume this was in lowsec as you didn't specify. You will get engaged by gate guns if you engage a target that doesn't have -5 or worse security status. I have no idea what the E-Uni overview settings are, but either they dun gon messed up or you have when setting them up.

Check to make sure your overview only shows flashy reds when it's a pilot you can engage anywhere. Being a lowsec pirateresident myself, my overview is set up so anything red/flashy red means I can shoot it regardless of gate/station/anything guns, and amber means I can shoot it anywhere but will get sentry aggro if I attempt violence within the range of them.

Either that or Show Info on someone before you start shooting them and make sure they're an outlaw. If you're using the free intel channellocal you should have a good idea who you're about to land on anyway. Obviously in this case the two guys jumped
in to you but as soon as +1 appears in local it's always a good idea to check them out.

EDIT: Your wording is ambiguous. If the gate guns helped YOU kill THEM, then your being neutral is what made the sentries attack them because they were the aggressors in the fight. If you attacked them first (assuming they were outlaws) then they would have been able to retaliate in self defence with no repercussions but if they attacked you first then by virtue of you having positive sec status (in the sense that you're not -5 and outlawed) they would have incurred sentry aggro.
