Would you except ads in the EVE Launcher, if it meant CCP would use it to improve your experience?

DISCLAIMER: I am not a representative of CCP or anything other than the gathering of nomadic explorers. Remember, CCP has tended to go through with ideas whether or not the mass of the community approved of them. I am not here to try and ruin your game with ad spam, as I pay for it too.

Everyday you open your new flashy launcher and log in to your account. You probably rarely ever look anywhere else than the download bar. You may have also glanced down at that little area on the bottom left that usually contains information about deals or sales. What if it had an Ad in it? It wouldn't be anything too extreme. Maybe just a ad for that new windows tablet that just came out. You are a bit angered that the ad is there but you've noticed the quality of the server has improved.

Would you protest?

What are you looking for here? Read the post!

No thanks

Only open the launcher when I get incompatible protocol and go through the update, otherwise it's always from the exefile.exe

So don't care either way.

However if I'm 'forced' to use the launcher and that launcher had adverts..would not be impressed.

Worst thread ever, and this isn't even Features & Ideas. Drugs are bad and you should stop taking them. This thread is why.

Anyone played Battlefield 2142?

EA decided to put in billboards for ads (Coca-Cola added a futuristic ad into it even). They placed the "warning" in the box so players wouldn't know of that annoyance.

What was one of the most popular mods for that game?

Replacing the ads with a generic EA logo instead.

Battlefield has been ad free since then (though they went with the DLC model instead). Roll

why are people so hostile today?

adds on the launcher are a bad idea, no one would pay attention to them... but CCP adds that used to be on the log in, are now on the char select screen where they have near zero visibility.

...why not? If we click on the ads 7 days in a row, the launcher is disabled for 3 weeks Pirate

If they would use the money for the right thing, why not, if's just on the launcher? But considering the "greed is good" thing, this will never happen, so better not . Speaking of, i never tought that was even a leak, back then. Was just a offense, willingly let to slip out to ppl.Lol

Nope Orange County Choppers and Harley get Cruisers
Kawasaki, Ducati, etc get Frigates
Ford/Chevy get battlecruisers
The people who designed the original Humvee and Hummer get the Battleships
12 year old kids on the internet trying to wave their epeen get capital ships

I wouldn't like it, but being honest, I'm not sure it'd be a dealbreaker for me. It'd only be there for as long as it took me to log in, and it'd be easy enough to ignore.

Having said that, I don't think it'd do the Eve brand any good. We already pay to access the game. We'd then effectively be paying CCP to show us ads as well. While TV and Radio might get away with this, there's different expectations from a game company. The risk for CCP would be that they lose a lot of goodwill from the players, particularly if the players didn't see a benefit in return. That goodwill is quite a valuable asset already in regards to promoting the game. I don't think Eve has the necessary subscription numbers that would make the launcher a viable advertising platform for third parties. If that's the case, I don't think it would be worth trading customer goodwill for something that probably wouldn't generate much income.

No thanks, one of the main reasons I love Eve is because CCP aren't EA or Actiblizz. They don't let greed ruin their games like most other developers want to.

There are ads in the launcher. There has been since they invented it. There were ads on the login screen before the launcher and still are.

I bet they did the new launcher specially for ads. That's why they did insist to keep a broken thing up.

As long as it's EvE related with promotions and money off codes on store purchases. They could start up an EvE Rewards Club. Earn x-amount of points when you purchase something from the store, save them up enough to buy exclusive in game/rl items from the store.
win/win.
