Detachable Turrets

Recently a game, I liked to play, came to my mind (Independence War II: Edge of Chaos). In this game it was possible, to detach your guns from your ship, and use them as drones. I am wondering, how this would work out in EVE.

My thoughts so far:

- New class of weapons: Detachable Turret.
- Are fitted to high slots, and occupying one turret slot.
- If attached, Turret skills and stats are applied.
- If detached, Drone Skills and Stats are applied (i.e. Drone Bandwidth).
- Need ammunition, need to reattach to reload.
- Detachable turret versions of different turret types and sizes (Laser, Hybrid, Projectile)
- May be stored in the Drone Bay.
- May be possible to change turret type by detaching, storing in drone bay, starting different type, reattaching.

Conclusions so far:

- Needs vast amounts of skillpoints (Drones and Gunnery).
- Not suitable for droneboats, as turrets and drones can't be used simultaneously.
- Adds droneboat like functionalities to ships with low drone bay space.
- Needs vast amount of designing, coding and balancing to implement.

This post is not a request, to implement this as game content. But I would like to read the thoughts of the community about such a type of weapon. Would it be fun to play with? Is it totally worthless in EVE? Has anybody else had similar ideas?

erm...why? What does this do that sentry (or any other) drones don't already do better?

Yep, sentries are your answer. Best thing about them, no need for ammo or sacrificing highs to use them. Not so best thing, they like to ignore your orders sometimes.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

so you want to lose dps?

Your pve ship probably has at least 3 damage mods (or TE in the case of minmatar for better falloff damage) that won't be applied to a "drone" since off of the ship.

max drone skill damage will always be less than max gun/ship skill outside of mommies (carriers well trained are equvalent dps to a good bs as well). this is why domi has crap mission times versus mach, golem, tengu, etc. Hell a high skilled pest will be on mission 2 for the night while that domi is still chugging alling in missions 1 assuming same missions.

You if a dedicated pve'er have a pve clone with implants to boost ability. Implants that won't affect these guns as drones since bonueses are applied on ship only.

And they would be static. With low ehp. One aggro shift in a room and pop pop goes the weapons.

Want a drone boat, fly a drone boat. Want a gun/misile boat, run a gun/missile boat. Want best of both worlds, fly gurista and some other pirate ships. Gun boats get small drone bays for a reason....the drones are there to kill the frigtates your guns can't catch. Why they don't have large drone bays. Golems and CNR's don't need to be spitting out 5 sentries. Nor do machs.
