As the title states I'm new to Industry(and EVE Online for that matter.) I am interested in the Industry side of the game, focused around mining and all that it contains. I am 1 day away from a retreiver with strip miners I. I understand solo high sec mining isn't very profitable, but I still have a few questions. I tried asking these in Rookie channel but there was simply too many people asking questions that I couldnt get an answer.

1. Until I max out my Refining skills, should I just sell the raw Ore?

2. I assume I should focus directly on getting into the Hulk asap? So I would neglect the specific mining crystals skills until I'm sitting in my Hulk?

3. (similar to question 1) Should I build ships and modules with my minerals once I get refine well? Or should I just sell everything?

4. Is it true that unless I'm in null security space Veldspar is the best thing per m3 of cargo space? I googled ore and got a chart with values, etc.

Thanks for your time!

Before I begin, click here.

Use that website. Know it, and love it. It tells you which ores are the most valuable. For example, pyroxeres is the most valuable high sec ore as of this posting. Sometimes Veldspar will be the best, and sometimes other ores will be the best. Except for Omber. Omber hasn't been the best since the drone regions killed isogen prices oh so long ago.

As for whether to sell or refine ore: do your homework! Figure out how efficiently you can refine your ore, figure out how much the minerals you get are worth, and compare against how much the ore is worth. Sometimes the ore is worth more, and sometimes the minerals are worth more. It all depends on the market in your area.

If you are obsessed about mining, then yes the Hulk is the ship for you. HOWEVER, a few words of wisdom:
1) Hulks are one of the most common ships to suicide gank.
2) Hulks have a tank made out of paper-mache, if someone DOES try to suicide gank you, you are almost guaranteed to die before CONCORD arrives.
3) Hulks are expensive. If someone suicide ganks you, you will be set back by a day or more of straight mining
4) Mining is really VERY boring. Mind numbingly boring. On the other hand, it is easy to do semi-afk, so it is the perfect activity if you are doing homework, watching a movie, flipping your orders on the market, or anything else at the same time.

As for building: once again, the only thing I can say is to do your homework. Sometimes manufacturing can increase the value of your minerals you mine, and sometimes it decreases the value of your minerals you mine. Ammo is a good place to start, as it is always in demand (provided you sell it at the right station) and has low, but consistent profits.

Firstly industry isn't just mining. Most successful industrialists probably don't even bother mining.

1. Depends where you mine/sell the ore. Ore tales up a lot of space, sometimes it is better to refine it and lose some minerals, but save some time.

2. For mining, nothing beats the hulk. But a covetor with t2 crystals is quite efficient too. I prefer the hulk for the cargo space, because it lets you AFK and mining is so boring. FWIW I get most of my minerals from mission running.

3. Except for a few ships in a few outlying markets don't even try building ships without Production Efficiency trained to 5 and a well researched blueprint. The ship market is very competitive. On the other hand some modules can be very profitable. But no-one in their right minds will tell you which ones Cool

4. Ore table It depends on the prices. Last time I checked Pyroxeres was the best hi-sec ore, but it goes up and down.

1. Find a friend, or join a corp and ask them to refine for you.

2. If you can afford a hulk from mining when you get the skills for it, sure, why not.

3. If you decide to get into manufacturing you will very quickly find that you will not be able to keep up with your own mineral demand, and your hauling time will kill any time you have to mine. Since there is very little overlap between mining and manufacturing skills, decide which is more interesting, and go there. (A retriever is plenty to get you started in t1 manufacture. Just remember, mins you mine aren't free). If you decide to do manufacturing, you'll likely end up doing invention which can be ludicrously profitable, though capital intensive.

4. An ore chart updated with prices will tell you your isk yield per hour.

The answer to all of your questions (well, except the hulk one) lies in a spreadsheet that you build for yourself. Use YOUR refine efficiency (pretty easy to get to 100% TBH), YOUR tax burden (not so easy to 0) and the prices YOU can get in the range YOU are willing to haul to.

Figure out what it costs to build various things (http://www.eve-market-guide.com/manufacturing.php]this site can give you a leg up, but remember to calculate profit based on your actual costs). Use eve-central or jitonomic.com to figure out what is actually being bought at a price that gives you a profit. It won't be ships. Some ammo in some places you're better off buying to recycle than you are building.

Always cost what you build as if you bought the minerals, otherwise you're liable to rip yourself off.
