What is a Troll?

So, I've been getting back in the game again after about a year off. I like it much more now.... maybe I just get it now!

I've been finding myself caring more about stuff that goes on and I read these darn forums more than I should. I here the word TROLL a great deal and was wondering what the true meaning is and why do it?

It does bug me that people just comment to bag on someone else's topic and not to actually help. Is that all a troll is?

Well, it could be those ugly things that live under bridges, but this is the true definition of a troll.

You make a valid point, good Sir or Madam.

A troll is either someone with whom you disagree, or someone who is baiting you, normally in order to disrupt the discussion or provoke you to be aggressive enough for mods to take action.
For further explanations, check out http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll .
That site in general is excellent to learn internet slang.

As I have come to know it, a troll is a set of actions that aren't quite genuine to the intention.

If I was to troll this thread, I'd pretend like I was helping but really I was lying my ass off to see if you would go forward with the false information. Hence I trolled you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolling_(fishing) This also has a lot to do with the origin of the word. Trolls are basically fishing for a funny response and tears.

Usually a troll simply corners with an example from captain obvious.

If the "victim" feels embarassed, then the person that pointed out the obvious is a "troll".

Conclusion:

Complainers are entitlement commie liberal democrats.

Trolls are intelligent, competitive, manly conservative republicans.

It is a term EVE players like to throw around when they have no good come backs for someones arguments.

But a troll would be someone who post just to be confrontational and post something to get a rise out of people.
They are not trying to make any valid points they will just say something to argue and try to get you to rage and get upset.
Normally followed by a "U MAD BRO" when you feed into their nonsense.
Most people in EVE being a bit older then your average MMO players do not grasp the true meaning of troll.
That bit about them being older is a little trollish.
But here is EVE it is tossed around a lot when it shouldn't be.

EVE tends to be filled with narcissistic people they post just to see their own typing. They are their capsuleer they borderline psychopathic tendencies.

Trolling is the art of making someone believe you are dumber than you actually are.

Not today spaghetti.

I don't think anyone on eve has been trolled. It's more of a squabble until someone locks the thread.

the definition of the word troll in regard to behavior in the e-world has been twisted around so much and can be virtually used to describe any idiotic behavior,

I believe the true original definition of th word troll in regard to video games is one who purposely and maliciously acts in a way to receieve a negative/angry response from someone else.

See? That's how it's done.

you sir, are a porch in this world of light.

here, have a cup of tea.

in addendum: my good sir, I am also inclined to denouce you as one of such kind, if said kind is the same that do live below the structure that allows people to, usually, travel above an expanse of water, particulary, a unidirecional course of water that sometimes leads into the ocean.

a troll helps you to find flaws in your personality, yet not accepted by everybody and therefore called troll... ultimately a troll can learn you how to stay focused and self confident without getting angry... often trolls like to find other trolls to engage in troll fights, the winning troll is the one who did not get angry and therefore leaving behind his trollform and becoming human again

Do a topic search for topic locked and you will see certain names over and over again. These people will troll a thread they disagree with just to get it locked. Very clear pattern, I have asked the question why do the threads keep getting locked and the trolls not given a vacation?

I was pointing out people posting in the threads they dont agree with and then trolling to lock it, but it could be the OP as well as you pointed out.

If you say something stupid/wrong and then start fighting tooth and nail to defend your position even when it's long past obvious that you're wrong; you then claim that you were trolling everyone, thus saving your imaginary e-peen.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.
