One of the big changes that's going into EVE Odyssey is a revamp of how you find things in space. The sensor overlay is a massive part of this change. In this dev blog, CCP Frellicus delves into the thought processes and goals that went into redesigning it.

Great changes! Are you guys going to give all players the Astrometrics skill, even those current characters who don't have it, or is it just for new players only?

Enter grid and you're already dead, destined to be reborn and fight another day.

<3 the cross integration of the overlay and the map. I'm looking forward to playing with this.

Roll back the insta prob returning when jumping oos or docking. You are dumbing EVE down doing that and crushing a nice market niche

The sensor overlay has nothing to do with skill levels. That applies to the aftermath when you try to probe down a signature. AFAIK we are not giving any skill relating to the actual probe scanning although the exact effect is changing somewhat. But that is Team Super Friends territory, as they implemented those changes.

It'd not dumbing down, but it's definitely not a good change. I can't say I've been thrilled with Super Friends' communication in that thread though.

Maybe I've been spoiled by Prototyping Rocks.

Edit - Regardless, this is the wrong thread for that, these devs had nothing to do with it.

I think this will achieve your goals for the feature quite nicely, but it also highlight one of the problems with the current exploration. That being the feeling there actually isn't anything hidden to find and therefore it's not really exploring. All potential sites are immediately visible to everyone just by entering the system and even the likely locations for sigs are now shown without any effort. Since there isn't even the pretense of anything hidden anymore to find and reveal, we aren't really explorers we are treasure hunters, that delve to sites everyone already knows about and sees.

The above isn't precisely an issue with just the new system, but it really brings it to the forefront. Exploration usually means going of the beaten path and seeing if you can find something of interest not immediately visible to the people just passing through. You've now officially made the equivelant of glowing arrows pointing every player to the "hidden" items you've sprinkeled throughout your game, when before people actually had to prepare and spend some effort to achieve the same. If there is one major downside you've introduced with these changes, this would be it and I hope future iterations to the system try to bring actual exploration back to the game.

They pulled those changes. The probes will no longer insta-recall on jumping or logging off, etc.

Actually if u don't deactivate probes they'll still magically appear in your cargo. That is bad

I've tried this on SiSi and I have to say I like it. It does what it is supposed to do and does it good.
But when doing things that have noting to do with what's in system (like travelling), it gets annoying. It isn't that it takes more time after a jump (it doesn't) but is is unnecessary extra sensory input that under such circumstances is irrelevant.

So wile I like it and definitely are going to use it, I would like to have the option to shut it of completely when I don't need it at all.
When doing a long haul in a perfectly fitted Freighter for instance...Blink

Wrong, that just means that if you manually deactivate your probes, they don't auto-recall, so you can still leave behind probes in tactical positions for later.

The teleporting on recall and auto-recall on dock, system change or log-off remains.

Edit - Actually hang on, maybe I'm reading it wrong. They still auto-recalled on the test server as of yesterday, hrm.

Not liking the radial button on the HUD to open up the scanner window. What used to be one click, is now two.
Alt + D to the rescue.

Also not liking the in-space icons for the signatures, it's out of tune with the rest of the brackets;
But i probably should've posted this in the F&I feedback threads.

Only issue is that it's automatic upon undocking.

I feel that will get old quick. A simple toggle (similar to the current safety) will save a lot of complaining and preserve the shiny-new-feeling of the sensor overlay effect.

With a slight pull to the left with the mouse during the click you can still have it once click.

And talking about shortcuts you can use CTRL+O by default to enable/disable the sensor overlay as well.

Tsk Tsk CCP. You guys and your dual-tanked ships (picture in dev blog). No wonder there are so many noobs doing this and thinking its cool... I would offer to send those fits to the graveyard but last time I fought one of you on SiSi, I killed him and then he Doomsday'd me with his pod :(

I couldn't find the info, but does it mean that whatever is displayed after the initial scan - these are the only sites available in the system, just a matter of pinpointing it; or there are other sites that you still have to find using probes?

Curious as to the nature of some of the ideas that didn't make it because they were "bad". Can you shed light on that?
