Gallente PvP & Doctrines -- Crosstrain or sell?

Hi All,

I've been away for a bit and reassessing my training plans. To my regret, I sold my pirate cross-trained character prior to ship re-balancing, At the time I wasn't really concerned about (null) fleet doctrines and have another Caldari character, for variety.

For PvP, I have ships that will probably never see the light of day, (e.g. Dominix) or rarely and people have increasingly become Isk-smart using interceptors rather than Arazus.

Question I'm trying to decide whether to cross-train for Minmatar BS/Autocannons and then Caldari/ missiles, or train instead for a carrier, or just sell this character.

It's not just a matter of impatience -- I like flying frigs and cruisers -- (though there is that), I would like to avoid having a character with wasted skill points, should I decide to sell. I suppose said cross training would appeal to Vindi pilots, though.

At a cursory glance, post-balancing or otherwise, these are the Gallente PvP ships being used regularly.

T1/T2 frigs -- other than the stealth bomber.
Cerberus
Talos or Naga, variably
Gila (occasionally)
Catalyst Twisted

QuestionIs that pretty much it, or am I overlooking something?

I know Gallente wasn't immensely popular in PvP prior (other than solo/small gang somewhat), but along with a change of plans, I just wonder if it is less so?

Then again, I remember when Calari wasn't viable for PvP.

Thanks.

Well if you can use T2 hybrids already, then training the Caldari ship skills is a no-brainer. Just about all the Caldari turret platforms are excellent (except the medium railboats ofc), and it won't even take long to get the ship skills.

If rail boats are popular in Null that is welcome news to me. I know there are some Naga (and of course T1 frigs & cruiser) fans though -- which I have or will have covered to some degree.

I'm not real concerned about LV IV skills. Problem is that I usually train for an Interceptor, then T2 BC, fill in needed gaps, Cruiser V and work upward -- but this character was beelined for a Dominix. I've since filled in a lot of holes.

But aside from a 6-month plan, I'm thinking more along the lines of Alpha fleets and CTAs (as I'm considering Null vs. FW) Pretty much everyone I've talked to (admittedly, not that many so far) is still heavily Minmitar based -- perhaps followed by Amarr, understandably, for the most part.

My thoughts on training priority, so far include:

-- Finish BC V (Naga/Talos)
--T2 Hurricane fits (both gun types)
--Maelstrom T2 tank, T1 gun fit (a few LV IV skills)
Then, depending on need ...prioritizing
--Minmitar Cruiser V, BS V and T2 LG guns
Then decide on missles vs. X

Going this route I'll be in a gimped stealth bomber for some time, though I do have a Caldari Tengu/Falcon pilot I could put to use there.

And I suppose I could sell, donate and/or blow up the overzealous purchases I made at RVB. How can you not love the Vexxor? :)

Thoughts? Am I missing something on Caldari?

Thanks again.

Where in null are the rokh and naga not popular? I fly those ships on a daily basis.

Anyhow, it's a bit hard to say what I would do with the skill training in the absence of an eveboard sheet to look over.

Barring that information, I say your decision is entirely based on who you are flying with and if you want to continue flying with them. Some corp/alliance will be on yanking you around by the short and curlies until you have the exact doctrine ships they desire. Others are chill enough to work with your racial training and see where they can make use of you.

My comment about their popularity was not declarative, so I'm glad to hear otherwise. I honestly don't know how popular they currently are overall. Rather, it was an observation based on random kitchen sink outings or my experience (via my sold and Caldari character, mostly) in/with alliances that tend to fall in the first half of your description: the kind that decides everyone needs to be an a sniper Zealot yesterday.

As such, I'm not (was not) aware of much demand for the ships per my somewhat dated experience.

Otherwise I haven't made a firm decision on whom I'll be flying with, but so far Caldari wasn't mentioned, other than in vague reference to the Naga.

Thanks for the feedback, though.
