I know there is no 'One Ship to Rule Them All' (except the Tengu, naturally). This being said, what's the best ship for extended exploration?

By that, I mean a low-sec (maybe null?) that I can be out for a week or so at a time, without having to return for ammo and the like. I don't dual-box anymore, as I've settled on the one account. So I'm looking at a jack-of-all-trades type of ship, which, I know, will not do the job as well as a dedicated X ship type.

Primarily, I'll be focused on the pew-pew sites (DED, hacking, etc). I have no illusions of doing a 10/10 solo, or anything of that nature. The things i MUST have in the ship: Cloak, probes, and long lasting low m3 space taking ammo. To this end, I'm thinking the Legion fits best.

As I'm going for an 'all-in-one' type ship, I know it won't be the fastest in scanning, or running sites. Honestly, I'm not worried about that.

In my mind, the Legion (I've next to no experience using Amarr ships) makes the most sense. Its ammo takes up very little space. Instant ammo swapping makes dictating range rather easy. T3's have excellent tanks, so mid-ranged DED should be do-able? Disclaimer: depending on what space, yes, I know.

So, what I'm getting at, is if I slap a recon Legion together (nullifier included, naturally), probes, and the necessary modules for the specific sites I'm interested in running, can it be done?

I enjoy my Tengu, but it chews through missiles too fast, and I don't want to have to find ammo in the middle of hostile space.

Anyone with experience with this sort of desired set-up? Better ideas? I'm fairly a n00b explorer, so, please take this post with a grain of salt.

Legion will work but can struggle (by comparison to other ships) under the neuting of some complexes if you are running lasers+active tank. Obviously lasers will be better in some space than others.

If you do not really need the scanning bonus and are working in lowsec (no bubbles) an Ishtar will do what you need for cheaper.

Nerfing High-sec is never the answer. It is the question. The answer is 'YES'.

Back when they buffed salvage i went out to nullsec in Ishtar + Hurricane. It was a very quiet region (Guristas) and i filled my cargoholds with some small cans full of ammo for the Hurricane. The Ishtar was setup to do both Mags and Radars (including combat Ladars) and could do up to 8/10 there. So basically i did sites and went back when i had run out of ammo.

[edit] you could of course also do stuff like drag a covert hauler along, or some more advanced deployment methods involving covert cynos. Hell there have been people living out of an orca in null (snuck in through wspace).[/edit]

My advice is watch out for that Mnemo Gloob character, he'll steal all your Radar sites then violence your boats

Don't know what Mnemo Gloob will do but i wouldn't do a Radar or Mag site in k-space at all. What i will do is to try to snatch as many cans i can, from anyone who actually are going to do them. Just need to have a more timidating ship, that's all

If you want to deploy using only one ship, you are probably right about the legion being the best choice. Lasers and no drones is the way to go, which also means the ship will be most effective in areas with rats that are vulnerable to em/term damage.

Another option for extended deployment would be to bring a orca and use it as a mobile base, the maintenance bay would allow you to bring a battlecruiser, a T3 cruiser and a frigate. You will also be able to bring a small pos and the pos modules need to refitting etc, which solves the problem with having to use lasers.

The Orca is relatively cheap, but it's not the safest ship to fly around null, or low-sec.

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.

I hadn't though about Orca+ Small POS living. That might be something fun to work up to.

You cant generalize that.

I am using several setups, depending on what im planning to do.

Short trip setup (not more than 12 jumps distance, not longer than 4 hrs)
Hisec: 2 advanced cruisers, mostly 2 HACs, sometimes force/combat Recon with a missile class HAC.
Lowsec: T3 plus either one of the advanced, fitted for PVP situations and EWAR
Nullsec/WH: T2 cruisers including a heavy interdictor, when PVP is obvious

Mid trip setup (not more than 20 jumps distance, over max 4 days)
Hisec: Orca as hisec carrier, ships in hangar and resupplies in fleet hangars, T3/T2 depending on plans
Lowsec: Orca as carrier, same like above
Nullsec: carrier plus force recon T2 or T3

Long trip setup:
Hisec: Orca with POS
Lowsec: Orca with POS plus Carrier to guard, T2s/T3s additional
Nullsec: Carrier with POS, once setup bring ships to there, use carrier or stealth jumping T3s, depending on how dangerous area is, but this is hard to maintain with a 2 toon operation and very busy. And the systems in null where u can set a POS are not always calm regions, sometimes under heavy fire. Nothing id plan without caution and possible losses.

Several times i also used the Orca in nullsec as carrier. But this is so extremely dangerous as of today are so many gates camped. Additional when he is engaged with a warp disruption bubble your chances to survive it with an Orca are like zero. Numbers? 10 trips to nullsec with orca (through WHs) = lost 1 orca, and i was painful, allthough maths said it was worth it. But that was like about a year ago when ships where cheap - the prices are now over double of what they were then. Now much more mouthbreathing PVPers are out there and the ships are double as expensive, so i stopped doing that technique. A real carrier is much more useful but also a bit difficult to move from system to system and it limits your activity radius when you dont have a POS set up.

But you can still join one of those huge corps, share your income with them to finance their odd PVP activities :)
