I am looking into joining the Caldari miltia but dont know very much about how the lp system works. How much could I make as a solo pilot running missions or plexs? I primarily fly assualt frigs and battlecruisers. I dont have the skills to fly battle ships.

One of our completely new members just made 2.1 billion. In about 2 weeks, to put it in the perspective of newer players.

What exactly are you goals for FW?

if it just isk making then as Sean said billions can be made very easy in T1 frigs if you have the patience to farm plexes.
If it is more pvp related then just go ahead and join up.

FW is a very easy way to support your pvp. Especially if you fly smaller stuff. eg 1 minor plex will net you 10k LP when at teir 2 warzone control. This is enough LP to convert to a faction frigate which you can then use or sell. A minor plex take 10mins to run uninterupted.
So it is easy to support if you have low funds etc however as you get better at managing your combat loses the LP will just keep building to where you can convert to multiple navy BS's and sell them to the highsec mission running crowd for billions. Or expensive faction modules as well.

FW mainly revolves around small ship stuff frig - dessy - cruiser as the plexes have size restrictions so BC's/BS's are rarely used in 'active FW' but some of the FW groups do still grab a BC's fleet to go roam and kill the enemy, or whoever crosses their path Twisted

Like most things finding a good corp that operates in a manner that suits you is very good as the general npc militia can be a bit moronic at times and there is a lot of mistrust of general militia until you get known.

That is the Way, the Tao.

Balance is everything.
