I'm 27% colorblind to red/green and I support this.

It can't be hard to add an option to change red for blue or purple.

I'm not colorblind, but my brother is to a degree. Even if I didn't know anyone who wasn't colorblind, there's no reason not to implement some kind of alternate color themes for those with vision difficulties. No valid reason at all.

can't be that hard to use 2 different colours.. look at League of Legends colour blind settings...

CCP should support their players as much as we have supported them.

+1 for a colorblind mode.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

I heartily support this. Accessibility based on game difficulty is one thing (I love it that EVE is so hard), but accessibility based on color perception is another thing entirely.

+1 I'm AM NOT colour blind but I AM against discrimination. CCP need to be brought to account and help our colour blind capsuleers!

I'll be contacting my CSM Elective on this matter immediately and linking this thread.

EDIT: I've evemailed Trebor Daehdoow regarding this matter. If you want to use the below feel free but lets get some action on this and evemail your CSM Representative:

CCP's Discrimination Against the Colour Blind

From: Maximus Aerelius
To: Trebor Daehdoow

Hey there,

Something that's gotten me quite angry is this thread on the lack of colour blind friendliness of CCP and EVE. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=postmessage&t=234293&f=270 Any chance you could take a look, perhaps add your view and ask via the CSM what, if anything, CCP intends to do for these people? I think it's quite disgraceful that in this day and age we have to fight for colour blind friendly internet spaceship pilots and we don't want to be outdone by WoW of all things!

Thanks R,

M.

Would switching to greyscale only work?
That is just black, white and the shade of grey?

To be honest I don't think this is discrimination.
Given that displays are RGB, missing the ability to see red means you are fundamentally incompatible with technology.
And unless you do something like this thread, no one realizes you exist.
Blind people have sticks and animals, cripples wheel chairs, color blind have.... well nothing actually hence the reason you are overlooked.

I wonder if using augmented reality you could swap the world for greyscale and thus be able to actually see things.
That actually would be worth programming.

That's simply not needed. Most colorblind people are red/green and a few yellow/blue. Simply by allowing to switch red for blue would make 99,999% of the eve players happy.

You don't miss a color. In my case, some hues of red and green (mostly when they are bright) are hard to distinguish from eachother.

I change the colortag of corp members to blue to distinguish them easily from war targets Roll

I have raised this issue with CCP before, and will continue to do so. I've started a thread in the CSM internal forums about this and pointed interested devs to this thread.

Players with particular types of color-blindness may wish to list examples of where the interface lets them down and potential remedies that they think will have good "bang for buck" in addressing the issue.

I am red green colorblind myself and depending on the shades and size of the colors I am looking at, it can be difficult to tell the difference, especially when under pressure of time to identify what color something is. I am not sure if this would work for 100% of the colorblind population, but being able to change the red to a pink color makes a world of difference for me. This is what the colorblind mode for battlefield 3 does and it allowed me to stop teamkilling people when their dot showed up on the mini map and they were coming around a corner.

Lowering the average to make you look better since 2012.

More support from someone that's NOT colorblind, this has got to be very easy and simple to fix. Just DO IT!!

Bump for a good cause. From someone who is not color blind.

Seriously CCP, you once had a plan all figured out, where colors were not going to be the main mode of identification for anything. Where'd that go?

I would like to thank the guy who brought this to your attention and I'd like to thank you as well for taking it seriously.

You asked for examples.

There are three MAIN examples in the current interface that I find difficult. All three of them are things that happen under time pressure and are PVP related:

1) scanning. When using probes to scan for ships, the little red boxes on the solar system map are very difficult to see. I can usually find them eventually by moving the map into different orientations, moving probes out of the way and studying the screen carefully to see where they are, but they are nearly invisible to me. Moreover, if the red bracket overlaps a celestial then it is literally invisible to me. It makes probing ships very slow despite having a toon with perfect probing skills. I don't have trouble with the yellow brackets, just the red ones. Orange might work better than red. blue would be awesome.

2) red-boxing. It's very easy for me to see if I'm being yellow-boxed but it's difficult to see if I'm being red boxed. I simply can't see the little flashing red brackets around the ship icons in the overview well enough. If I put my face close to the screen or dim the lights in the room while I'm playing then my chances of seeing the flashing red brackets are better but I often have to *assume* I've been red-boxed when i see the yellow-boxes disappear. That can be very hampering in a fleet fight when your overview is full and only 1 or 2 people are shooting at you and you would like to know which ones so you can keep at range of them.... Here too, orange might work better than red.

3) Flying ECM...... I've gotten over the colour-coding of the jammer modules by putting them on my ship alphabetically by race. However, because you don't use the same jammers every time, I usually have to write them on a postit and stick it in my screen to avoid using the wrong jammer. I simply can't see the colour differences between these modules well enough to tell the difference between the racial colour coding. In fact, I didn't even realize there WAS a racial colour coding until a corp mate pointed it out to me. The solution would be to change the appearance to work a shape into the icon. A square, a triangle, a circle, a line....

There are some minor issues but these are the big things that happen under time pressure when being colour blind really inhibits gameplay. The new hacking mini-game with flying red and green cans where you need to only go after the green ones under substantial time pressure isn't even going to be remotely playable.

Thank you Trebor for posting up and lending your support to this. I hope you didn't mind my posting what I sent you for the other guys\girls to use as an example for their respective CSM Reps.

You're very welcome. I'm not colour blind myself but from what I've read this is an important issue for players who pay the same as the "colour seeing" players. I hope something comes from this and you get a level playing field even if it is bright pink for some of you Big smile

For the record I also support this iniative

I have already brought parts of the new scanner to the devs attention as being hard for colour blind players and requested a shape or other indicator that was not colour specific.

A change of colours in the scanning interface is necessary. The shade of green they used for a good hit and the shade of yellow (at least I think it was yellow) they used for a mediocre hit are utterly indistinguishable from each other.

The only reason I even know that there are two different colours is that my wife pointed it out.

With two CSM Members backing this I feel this should get some Dev attention hopefully. My thoughts on this would be:

Would it be possible to get a Dev Sticky (perhaps once Odyssey has gone LIVE so there's space) to enable ALL pilots with Colour Blindness (to whatever extent) to post up their specific issues\condition and what CCP could do to help?

I just think that instead of lots of threads being locked\opened on this issue if we had a sticky they might be able to collect more replies and really address this issue and save people 'bumping' threads to get others attention.

Just my thoughts. Oh and a free ride back to Page 1 Smile

I am not color blinded, but fully agree. I'd say this matter is much more important than any gameplay improovements. I hope that Odissey 1.1 will clear this, in case of 1.0 version is too late
