Can we help each other in the real world?

In 1983 a lot of business happened in bar rooms. People drank too much and talked a lot and made promises. The result of this was that houses and roads were built, commercial buildings, trade agreements, and retirement contracts. These things really happened, as people socialized and partook in their "addictions." It can be argued that the world would not have been built were it not for alcohol and bar rooms.

Have you made business contacts or altered your real world position by playing video games? raised money for charity or made someone else's life better?

Perhaps these games are nothing more than a passtime, a diversion that has no purpose other than recreation. But if that is the case then all the hours spent drinking in bars should be no better.

Thoughtful post, I think the main issue is their addictions where In a time that had a little more economic liberty and prosperity. A time where you had to socialize in public. I think the most you can help some one in our community is if you A) know them in RL B) know them very well in your corp. and the only way you could really help the is monetary. Or perhaps start a website.

I come to New Eden to a) escape the wretchedness of RL and b) harm people because I cannot in RL.

I have no driving goal of helping anyone, and in fact if my blowing up of their internet space ship harms them somehow in RL all the better.

Its fully possible to "help" someone trough an online game.

For me i can point to a corp member who happens to be a lawyer giving me advice that helped me make a decision on if i should get involved in...a very nasty situation involving a place i used to volunteer. I also know he has helped other corp members with similar advice.

But of course you have things like people meeting and getting married online, being able to help someone when they are having a rough time or talk to them about their issues (for many its easier to open up online since people are less likely to judge you, and if they do it does not really affect anything), and over all gaining a better understanding for different cultures and personalities.

And then you have those who are able to learn from things they do in game and bring it to the real world, like being in a leadership position, gaining patience, and understanding and learning to make compromises when its needed.

Are you suggesting forcing real ID, that would be awesome, I bet people would be a lot nicer.

Also, could be quite amusing. I'm certain that the real life Mahmoud Ahmadinejad can be found frequently piloting a 'cane around Genesis.

[insert random rubbish that irritates you personally] is further evidence that Eve is dying/thriving*

I know that the Pony fandom has a few parts of it that makes it disliked and facepalmable, but there's a point I can say about it. Recently one of the Yourubers doing analyst videos ended up being unemployed due to the recession, and his unemployment benefits ran out (I think that's the system in New Jersey anyway) so another reviewer made a video for a donation drive, and he ended up with around a dozen beds on offer till he got his feet on the ground and a fair wodge of cash to tide him through, while he was looking for work.

Not sure if that's what you are after, but that's something that jumps to mine, I think these addictions as you put it give a group mentality when reinforces and defends its identified own. We are all equals in our sin and passions, and whether that be Spaceships, relaxing over alcohol and a cigar or cartoon ponies, the mentality is strong throughout each.

not sure it's a good idea to make irl business relations through an internet social channel such as EVE. people who choose to do so should be more cautious than they would be on [primarily] social sites (which expect its users to represent themselves accurately and honestly).

I had a capsuleer reach out to me about irl events so i agreed to fly her out of her situation. but instead of myself, the people who showed up at the airport to receive her were her parents.

her situation was alarming, to say the least, and I had to make things right. best irl money I ever spent. talk about a betrayal ("you can't handle the truth")

or: how to save a life for 9 billion ISK, and yes I did help someone out... more than they realized they needed.

that I should worry about losing my hearing is nonsense, because there will always be -=BASS=-

Great story! Im a bit busy atm but I may have to pry a bit more =-) Are you still in touch with the woman who's parents that you rescued? How old were they?

Re OOPE; I thought about it myself. There didn't seem to be that much going on in GD and it is definitely a crossover thread. I'm a bit disapointed that it got moved just because GD gets so much more traffic and its an interesting thought. Maybe it will move more discussion to OOPE!

Yes there was a fundraiser for his family shortly after he passed away. Can't remember who organized it but they managed to raise 127.000 $ for his family. Fundraiser link .
