Concrete in our sandbox - A feedback thread.

Like we all know this game suffers from a harsh learning curve, and the devs are constantly working to make it easier on rookies.
This is especially noticeable in later expansions and some concrete is now being added to our much beloved sandbox.

I don't mind those plastic buckets that you fill with sand, flip and then you have a ready made sand castle. It's very handy for those who aren't interested in sand sculpting or simply aren't old enough to build a castle on their own. What I don't want in my sandbox is concrete.
Concrete is a good material, don't get me wrong. It's cheap, durable and easy to work with. But once it sets its set.

Like concrete some of the changes that have been made and some that are comming in odyssey it does not allow for creativity.
What is most obvious right now are the changes to exploration which brings things like forced probe recall, forced probe patterns, forced this and forced that. It won't change the game overly much and it won't kill EVE... Yet.

Personally I don't care all that much about changes to exploration and probing. What I on the other hand do care about is forced mechanics.
I would love to see players being able to choose between a simple setup where the game holds your hand for a bit, and an advanced setup where the player makes his own choices. Instead, the game will now take your hand whether you want it to or not and lead you on a pre destined path.

This is relevant simply because if we, we children with sand in our underwear, don't say "No" now, we could find ourselves in a space game that allows for less and less freedom with every expansion released. That is why we should care and that is why we should say no.

yeah, like things like the safety button I approve of as it's an option. they should stick with that ethos. I think they'll probably fix scanning to be a compromise between the old and new eventually.

I have spent 10 years playing EVE on "hard mode' and if CCP wants to make improvements to simplify the mundane and irritatingly complex crap in the game such as scanning, I am all for it. There is nothing being done that changes the game or makes the game so easy that it will harm anything or anybody. EVE's biggest problem is the hurdle of difficulty a new player has to climb over just to keep going. Fixing that isn't going to kill EVE at all...ever...it helps EVE grow.

Bounties for all! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2279821#post2279821

I am sorry if I did not make myself clear, english is not my first language.
Making things simpler for new players is a good thing and I am all for that. Showing new players how to do something and then letting them chose for themselves if they want to do it their own way or doing it the simple way is a good thing. Forcing everyone to use the simple way is not a good thing.

I don't think "people who play something eye-waterringly painful just so they can clap themselves on the back for it" is a great demographic target.

So... dark souls' market performance isn't an indicator of anything?

Can't you recall the drones manually? I know you can move the probe positions manually.

The analogy would be if CCP removed the right click menu for drones, forcing you to launch your largest drones first and then recall them if you wanted a different set, and on recalling then choose from a dropdown menu which group of drones you actually wanted to deploy.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

It would have been perfectly possible to improve the usability of the scanner without shitting half of it. I don't think the team working on scanner changes did a good job.

People bitching about pressing a key x times to launch their probes? -> enable auto-cycle option present on all other modules.

Moving probes feels tedious? -> introduce saved probe patterns.

Resizing probes is clumsy? -> tweak grab areas and arrows and implement KEY SHORTCUT TO CHANGE RANGE ffs

etc.

Celestial bracket fix is good, why not fix the wormhole bracket problem? What about a key shortcut for cycling the probes?

Nobody complains about the idea of improving scanning (or anything in general), it's just the way it's done in Odyssey that sucks.

CCP has been doing this for years. There is no sandbox thats really just a myth now. EvE is as structured as WoW.

In a sandbox game devs create rules (high, low, null, game mechanics (ex - players should be relative safe in high, less safe in low, not safe in null)), create tools (ships, modules, skills) then the players create the content.

But thats not how EvE works anymore. It was but its slowly been whittled away by nerfs and changes to the point that to do anything other than what the Devs want is pointless, they want you joining a big cookie cutter alliance. Ships come prenerfed towards that goal. Modules are restricted in use or unavailable unless you go cookie cutter alliance play.

Its identical to WoW, in WoW the pinnacle of success in raiding, in EvE is null sec alliances, sov and associated play. Where is the sandbox?

CCP Fozzie “We can see how much money people are making in nullsec and it is, a gigantic amount, a shit-ton… in null sec anomalies. “*

Kaalrus pwned..... :)

How did you figure this out? Joining an alliance and living in null is just one option of many.

was looking at the NVidia forums because of the recent driver bug and saw the NVidia forum mod calling eve a "fringe game" .. this after they had an NVidia guy come to last year's fanfest to talk about tessellation. Im pretty sure they are trying to fix the sandbox so the fringe game impression goes away instead of pouring concrete like you said.

A good sandbox is one where the game 's challenges are derived from other players not the game interface.

I would very much like you to elaborate on this. What is it actually supposed to mean? It could be read as both agreeing and disagreeing.

Look up dwarf fortress if you want a game with a terrible interface.

the difficulty of the game shouldn't be in wrestling with the interface to perform menial tasks

aye but the beef seems to be mostly that you can't do things like launch single probes around your ship like you can now.
