Ability to probe through gates

Not sure if someone's suggested this before.

I would like to see covops have the ability to launch a special probe through gates that will report what is on the other side.

The results could be what's in the immediate vicinity of the gate or even a general scan of what is in the system like the deep-space probe used to give would also be useful.

This would give covops ships another tool to scout, relatively undetected in the target system. The probe could still be seen in the d-scanner so people in the system could know someone is checking from the other side.

You could have the probe require the ship to be uncloaked and be relatively close to the gate so that there was some level of risk involved with scanning a gate with them.

Just a thought.

The idea has been posted before, and more than once.

The consensus was that this makes gate camps less effective.

While I don't see that as true if the point of a gate camp is to deny access, I could understand it would diminish your kill mails if you relied on this mechanic for it.

Limiting this ability to just covops means you don't really change gate camp mechanics much. Most gate camps won't catch a decent covops pilot anyways.

This would mostly give covops an advantage for scouting over interceptors or other cloaky ships in that they can scout a system without alerting the locals.

All it would do is require someone to be in a covops as part of a basic roam, over an inty or bomber. Farther diminishing the viability of small roams and raids (3-10 pilots) as many roles in these groups are taken on by individuals; I.E. Fast Tackle/Scout/Hunter/Frigate DPS.

People wouldn't roam in small gangs anymore and the blob would only get bigger.

Any small gang that is currently viable would be completely unaffected since you're not removing the ability of your current scouts to do whatever it is they are doing now...

You'd be giving covops a new scouting ability, whether you use it or not is completely up to you.

Finally, something that forces actual game-play instead of mechanic-play.
