"Giff".

Might be because of British English, but if it was pronounced as OP indicates, it would be "Jhiff" to me.

'Cause PNG's better, especially if your browser's smart enough to support APNG (I'm not sure the EVE browser does since it's such an outdated PoS).

Though I pronounce the obsolete format "gif" as in "gift."

The good news for pretty much all Romanians is that we've been accidentally pronouncing all as intended.

In Romanian, there are only a few things that are pronounced differently from how it's written, and the sequences "gi"/"ge" and "ci"/"ce" are the most commonly encountered oddiies (pronounced "j-" and respectively, somewhat similar to the "c-" in "chair").
Side-note, the ones pronounced as you'd normally expect (for a (mostly) "spell as it sounds and read as it's written" language) instead of gi/ge/ci/ce are actually ghi/ghe/chi/che.

So, basically, we've been calling "gif" a "jif", and if you wanted it to be called "gif" you would have had to write it "ghif".

I've always pronounced it JIF. Never gave it any thought, and I wasn't really aware anybody pronounced it any differently.

I've... seen things you people wouldn't believe...

In Spanish they're JIF as for the general rule concerning ge/gi, they're pronounced the same as je/ji in Spanish.

It's pronounced with an English "J" sound. Any other way is wrong. Most of us didn't even have to have CompuServe accounts back in the day to know how to pronounce it. Graphic Interchange Format let you download uncompressed pics quickly, hence the pronunciation.

No huge surprise there, since both Spanish and Romanian are mostly derived from Latin Blink
