Hello friends and welcome to my first ever attempt at a CYOA (Choose Your Own Adventure) thread here on the General Discussion thread for EVE Online, the popular spaceship MMO. If you are unfamiliar with the genre, then perhaps read the rest of this post to get a basic understanding; otherwise, feel free to scroll down to the end of the post where there's some writing in bold typeface.

CYOA is a genre of books and forum threads with which many of us have at least a passing familiarity from the library books we read in elementary or primary schools. For children, these typically include books in large fonts with less than a hundred pages, of which most are devoted to the various arching choices made on some prior page; for example, one might be asked on page 1 to choose to turn left or right at a corridor, to shoot a bad guy or take him prisoner, and so on, and as a result of that decision to then turn to page 2 or page 73. That is exactly the type of thing that will be going on in this thread, but it will be in space; specifically, it will be in the fantastical space world of New Eden and I will make at least a passing effort to pay lip service to the prime fiction with any of the arching dialog and action choices.

Now that you know what a CYOA is in terms of genre, it's time to explain how a CYOA thread works. Long story short, I type up a metric ass-load of words, a small subset of which will be in bold and italic typeface. That part in normal font will be setting the scene, kind of like an Internet role play chat but with less links to cats or My Little Pony fan fictions; and, the part in bold typeface will present you, the readers, with a choice or choices to make. After reading a given part of the post, you will either comment in normal text or you will, if so inclined, vote which way you think our adventure should go, by posting in bold typeface. A simple numerical count of who responded in which way will decide how I, the narrator, project future events. It's kind of like a tabletop RPG, except that instead of there being multiple people who control individual characters there will be multiple people controlling a single scene, character, or aspect of reality.

If that sounds fun, then stay tuned! If it doesn't sound fun, then I dunno go whine about the Odyssey changes or something.

HEY YOU SKIP DOWN TO THIS PART!!!

So you're still here and you want to play a CYOA? That's great! I'll be making the actual OP as the second post in this thread, because I am a terrible person. Stay tuned!

You remember nothing of the past.

Sirens wailing stark white so hot your eyes burst. Adrenaline sears your veins, blood curdling as the screeching noise fills, penetrates, suffuses your flesh. You explode. Your senses are slow to return. Your mind is awash in pain. A dull ringing lingers, orange and rubbery. Your eyes barely work, pressure behind them like a vice crushing them.

You are waking up. Where are you?

A) A civilian apartment
B) A military checkpoint
C) A planetside hotel
D) A public bathroom
E) A sewage corridor
F) A spaceport terminal

Cripes, at least try to be more creative... Roll

In this thread you encounter a member of Goonswarm, a terrible null-sec alliance well-known as the leaders of the Clusterfuck Coalition. You can tell by the number of space-likes she has received that this Goonswarm member is quite popular, and at one point was being considered for a seat on the Council of Stellar Management.

Do you:
Troll her clumsily and make a fool out of yourself, only to get caught by an early quoter with a lengthy post? Post terribly in the next available spot

Ignore the thread? Go back to GD

Make fun of someone else in the thread, upping the post count in an attempt to **** up her CYOA links? Post wordily in the next available spot

CCP has no sense of humour.

Oh noes, I've been had!

Although to be fair, a goon with a huge like count isn't really anything to act surprised about.

Lyris Nairn doesn't need Goons to get likes, scrubs like me adore her.

All forums need choose your own adventure threads. You could link to new threads based on choices!

Sounds like fun.

Indeed, indeed. Lyris does have that odd charisma that makes it hard to not... I wouldn't say love, but more of a Lote. Combination of love and hate. Clever, right?

There is a word for that in Mandarin Chinese: aizou, a simultaneous feeling of love and hate. ♥

I'm a scrub who doesn't use a modern web browser, so the EVE forums ate my intended edit for the second post. Please stand by, as the CYOA will begin as soon as I type it again.

OP is up on the second post. To participate in this thread, you have a few options. Feel free to make any comments you like, and those may or may not influence either me or the other players. I will update this thread once a day with a new evolution of the story in which our protagonists finds themselves, where the story outcomes are based upon in-thread voting. To vote, you need to merely select a letter and bold it; i.e., " A," and I will count it. Some updates will have multiple options, which will be numbered; but, all choices will be given to you in letters. You are not required to vote on all options of a multiple-option poll, and you can use your vote to express a desire to avoid something; for example, if in the OP you don't really care where the protagonist is so long as they are NOT in a military checkpoint, then you can use your vote for that with the format, "NOT B," and I will use that vote to subtract one from the vote list for B. There will be a single prime, cannon, official, whatever-other-synonyms, outcome for each decision point, which will be decided by the number of votes for each. Please limit one vote per post, and if you decide to change your vote after posting it then do so with a strike-through in the following format: "A C," so that it's easy to keep track. I cannot do anything to keep anyone from posting on multiple accounts or characters, and to be honest that's fine with me: if it's good enough to influence official CCP functions, then it's good enough to influence this CYOA thread in GD. The limit on one vote per post is mostly to make it easy for me to count, not for any concern with fairness in a nonsensical work of horribly written fiction. Feel free also to add any commentary you like, beyond just the bold typeface letter corresponding to your vote; e.g., "A, I wake up after passing out on my best friend's sofa the night before," would be just fine; and, it would also be appreciated! Not only will I try to add details to the narrative that many people seem to want, but also some random detail pitched by the audience might actually help me to come up with an angle I hadn't previously considered.

In short, post early and post often but if you choose to edit your post please do so with the strike-through feature which is an s enclosed in brackets.

As bad as this thread is, at least its not complaining about the new 'feature which shall not be named for fear of causing more complaint threads about it'.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?
