If you fire the first shot you are the aggressor, and your opponent is simply defending her/his self.

If they fire the first shot at you, they are the aggressor, and you are simply defending yourself.

Me, I'll never fire the first shot.

It does not matter who makes the first shot, what matters is who gets the killmail.

Depends on a few factors of course. In terms of high-sec war, shooting before target aggression is usually pointless, unless they simply can't jump or dock. If I'm flying my 16,000 volley Machariel, shooting first is usually a good idea. The reduced session change timer, even though I like it, makes me a little sad in that respect.

Oh, and I really doubt the OP returns fire on anything with that kind of attitude.

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

Back when the "flare" on WH passage worked differently, I used to launch bombs at that special moment and catch the lucky contestant coming through unaware he was about to be engulfed in the bomb's AoE.

Sometimes it worked great, and the effects were hilarious.

Other times, I'd just warp off and listen to the spew of foulness in Local and still get a giggle.

The element of surprise, best surprise -- it's high time that Locals throughout EVE worked on the same basis as WH Locals.

So many negative Nancy's in this thread.

Looking to talk on VOIP with other EVE players? Are you new and need help with EVE (welfare) or looking for advice? Looking for adversarial debate with angry people?

But they fired the first shot they are the aggressor, and you would have the moral high ground to return in a better combat ship for revenge, provided you made a note of your opponents name.

I'd stick to high-sec if I was you.

What a pompous and patronising statement.

And yet completely accurate.

Hardly, that little girl seems to imply low sec is something to be scared of, but hey ho, when I've gone through the sisters of eve arch after the June 4 expansion I'll probably head over to low tec to see if its anything like its cracked up to be, heck I might even join a corp while I'm there, like say Pandemic Legion, as from what I've been reading, it looks like they could need some help with the Honey Bear Alliance kicking their ass all over low sec, but then I suspect Pandemic Legion are now well past their sell by date. Everytime I've been shot at first, I've lost a ship. Ever time I've shot first, they lost a ship.
Sure it won't always be that way (i'm guessing) but so far it has...

Shoot first, ask questions later.

One and only correct answer in EVE.

When 'Is the target a PL zergling with a cyno?' question rises to the top of the list there are a few other questions that must be answered...

Do you see at least 1/3 of a fleet composed of Tech 2 logistics ships on dscan?
Do you see 30 T3 battlecruisers on dscan?
Did you see 30 Nyx's on scan on your way through Amamake?
Does the target have a slight air of scumbag entitlement?
Does the target not respond in local chat due to his strict alliance rules?

The douchebag checklist goes on and on...

My what lovely nerd rage you have there. Also since when do we fly T3 Battlecruisers on fishing fleets and have rules against talking in local?

PS. No entitlement here, just smug superiority.

If you're at war then to wait until they fire at you is daft.

Not necessarily, if they use a gun your shields if the round hits can absorb the first round, if they use missiles or rockets you can see em coming, if they use lasers they might miss with the first salvo. Its the principal of who shoots first becomes the aggressor.

No it's the principal of surviving in hull or dying when your opponent only has hull left. The principal of killing your opponent before his buddies land on grid or being just too late so his buddies place the scrambler on you too.
Allways make the first shot if you feel an engagment coming.

The moral high ground is meaningless.

I shoot first when the situation calls for it, and wait for aggression when it calls for that (enemy on station or gate @ 0).
