I turned off the music the 2nd week of Eve so I guess I'm missing out on that grandeur. For what its worth, I only have 3 accounts, but find the new launcher adept at launching them as the old way.

I can't really argue with this at all.

But I don't pay every single month for 4 accounts just to have CCP give me only utilitarian functionality.

But the login-screen depicts "omg !!! spaceships in space!!!".

Your point is moot.

At least (for now) you can bypass the launcher using exefile.exe, but unlikely that one will remain for a long time...

The SSO login is pretty bad for those that have multiple clients.

/c

Yeah. It's particularly bad if you have to log in more than few clients in through that thing. Hell, even guys with just 2 accounts hate it in my corp. I'm myself at 6 atm and after doing it 2 times (having to click thru EULA both times btw) I were forced to just do the "direct link to ExeFile.exe".

I particularly dont like the extra poinless additional click which you have to do already after you have inserted the login details and pressed enter. then it loads for a little while and then you will have to push "Play" button to play that account - like really ? Would I enter my password and press enter if I would not like to play the game ? And only after you have pressed the "play" can you pick the "switch account" to login next account as otherwise no client is opened for you.

If I could choose, I'd like the old login screen and with music, even though I don't keep the ingame music on.

Purpose of a login screen is to put the player in the right mood, "here ends reality and you're a capsuleer again". Launcher, while handy and all, does not server this purpose very well.

The login screens have emotional value. It's setting up the mood before logging in to the game and the previous logins screens gives nostalgic feelings about early gaming experiences. For me the logins screens are also feels like bookmarks/reminders how the developement of the game progressed. Logins screens makes us feel like expansions are actually expansions and not just content patches.

I understand that the new launcher makes the login screen unnecessary, but it would be cool to see and hear the login theme at least during the character selection.

Some changes improve the game, some don't. This one certainly doesn't Sad

After thinking a bit more on it, i am liking my idea posted above: make the character selection screen be like the old login screen!

It's a pity that we can't count on the CSM about this, though. They're doing some Serious Business(TM) and can't be bothered with what the players think on something that Nobody Who Matters deems relevant. We're lucky to have the CSM to rescue us from our Stupid, though.

When I started my free EVE trial. The log in screen was a contributing factor into my decision to lay out the money for a subscription. Every time I logged in, I felt as if I was entering a vast universe and was excited to play.

Even now as a veteran player of EVE I still enjoyed each new expansion theme. The art and the music was great.
I am sad to see it go. It now feels as if I am just dropped into a barren game. Logging in is not exciting now. Its just logging in. like logging in to look at my bank statement. And seeing the subscription fees to play EVE. Something that needs done but is just boring.
I believe that some new players may not make that decision for a paid subscription. because of this bland log in. Which will lessen EVE. ( IMO )

It reminds me very much of what happened in Incarna re. "ship spinning".

CCP: you do realize that people who have been here for a long time think of EVE as a kind of second "home", right? There is a certain amount of bonding to the game that comes with familiarity, and a certain subtle sense of tradition. Of course some things can change over time. But other things are fundamental.

For example, new 3-d artwork for an expansion, new music, the sound of "Connecting" - these are fundamental. Triivial, in appearance, to be sure, but psychologically fundamental in the sense of keeping players bonded to the game. These are traditions by now. So we hear that while you can workaround to still get them now, they'll eventually be gone (unsupported - probably to disappear unceremoniously in some later update).

Not saying such things can't ever be changed, but you need to be more tactful about blithely re-arranging peoples' homes.

Well, something is better than nothing... CCP Dolan picked up the idea of the animated/themed character selection screen, apparently: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3074472#post3074472

Just chiming in:

I remember when I first logged in, that red background for Dominion is what really made me think, "Woa, I'm about to be in space."

That creepy vibe that the Incursion login screen had me wanting to explore Sansha space more than other factions.

I still listen to the Incarna and Crucible themes, and hum them occasionally.

CCP: While you're trying you're best to be convenient, you have to remember that people play EVE because games aren't made like these anymore. Getting rid of a login screen means more than you think. :(

Can't emphasize this enough. Sentimental value, atmosphere and immersion are immensely important for these kind of games. That's also a reason I hope we never get a Hello Kitty skin for any of the ships or something like that. I'd immediately uninstall and never look back.

I friggen hate the new patcher too, for all the reasons stated...

you guys made one of the best looking login screens ever, and then you whore it out to a ****** 6x6 window filled with links to **** i could give a **** about.

You took the art away and gave us a bunch of flyers, thanks.

Now i have to launch the exe directly, and whenever you guys do a patch...deal with that. v0v

The log in screen and music is iconic of Eve Online. It was the great transition between the real world and Eve. It gave you a few moments to collect your thoughts before plunging in to another great adventure.

So many of us watch the old log in screens and remember the good old days. We remember where we were and what we were doing when we logged in and were greeted by those screens and the music. When we visit youtube and watch those old log in screens again it's the purest form of wonderful nostalgia this game can offer.

Sure. You can argue that all it is is nolstagia. A waste of Dev resources and effort. But I think you will have hard time arguing that they added nothing to the game. If fact I think it would be quite easy to find lots of examples of those who love the log in screen and felt it added to Eve. This thread is filled with a significant number of them.

From what I have seen there were always two things that people looked forward to every expansion: the Log in screen/music and the expansion trailer. Those are the two things that people argue about which is the best. That noobs can look up on youtube and get a small glimpse in to the Eve us veterans have played. They remind us of how far we have come the past 10 years.

CCP please take the time to reconsider eliminating the Log in screen and music. To some it may not matter. Yes, it may make things 5 seconds quicker. But there are a lot of us who would dearly miss them and gladly continue to sacrifice 5 seconds every time we log in. They are one of the things that made Eve. Remember: sometimes it's the small things that matter most.

By the same logic as nerfing the Drake: Too many people using login screen, must be overpowered!

Honestly, I'll be fine with loosing the login screen if they redesign the character selection screen to be as compelling (themed by expansion of course).

The only end-game content in EVE Online is the crap that makes you rage quit.

I was at a coffee shop when I fired up the login screen during inferno. Someone came up to me and asked what movie was I watching... you wouldnt get that experience with a plain login.

The old login inspired me to explore the depths of internet space.
It inspired wonder.

i'm getting tired of this launcher now, despite it working. It does nothing for eve other than make it take longer to start up the game, and longer to start up multiple accounts. You shouldn't make it if it doesn't improve anything. If you want to shove eve news down our throats you should do it WHILST improving the things we really care about, as in the ability to switch characters quickly or start up your alts quickly. Also, not ever seeing the splash screen is a STUPID idea. I hope you fix that crap soon. Delete this launcher or make something that actually poses some benefit. Not only can the launcher not provide any nice features like the rendered ships and animations of the splash screen, but it doesnt do anything the splash screen didnt do that players actually care about, thus being pointless to work on.

It previously didn't annoy me because it was a single click of difference, but now i have to look at it instead of the splash screen. Boy, is that aggravating.

You guys are talking about seamless change between things in the game, why should we have to see another window before we get into the game? The game should be the game, not another window, then the game. We want to play the game when we want to play it, not see other crap.

Either make the launcher look essentially exactly like the splash screen with possibly a bar for current patch download progress/news, or not even use a launcher. Easy as that.
