Although I outright support WiS developement, "Eve is dying" is a terrible argument for it. Because it really isn't. Sub numbers, and active players are up, botters are down, and the last expansion brought in more new players than any previous expansion. Doesn't really matter how much we complain about content additions, ultimately the game is thriving.

That said, Eve really does need to look to the future. WiS adds the fantastic opportunity for free to play content. The MMO market is headed there eventually and it won't be long before new sub MMOs wont work. Eve will probably continue to work because it has a dedicated playerbase but CCP still need to keep up with the pace.

Imagine if you will, an Eve Online where the stations are fleshed out, and anyone can play Eve for free. Free accounts come in, and can walk around but can't leave station in their own ship unless they pay for a pilots licence, which also gives them skill training abilities. If you need to move to another system you need to find someone with a licence to take you there. Imagine the tears you would get from ganking a passenger hauler filled with free accounts. It would be glorious. There would be a lot more courier contracts for the carebears because many players wouldn't be able to haul goods themselves. Everyone benefits.

Having said the above, I am not sure the Eve servers could handle the amount of players that would be brought in by a free to play model.

3D work should port nicely, but the engines are totally different. Avatars, and multiple avatars on screen, are solved problems in the UNREAL engine (which DUST uses) long since.

Most of the issues around avatar gameplay and CARBON have been solved, or are being solved, by the WoD team. They had to fork CARBON to do it, so it's not just a matter of taking their work and plugging it back in--but then, code trees get forked all the time, as it were, and there are lots of nice tools available for merging changes back into the trunk. In the mean time, it's not really shocking that avatar gameplay is being developed for a property where it's the only gameplay.

I believe Hilmar, or someone senior, was quoted as saying that what we have in EVE is a "prototype," and their technology has advanced considerably beyond what we see. The only questions are whether they'll roll that work back into EVE, and, if so, when.

Given the reaction to Incarna-the-release, I don't think they'll do it before they're absolutely confident that they have something good.

Right on.

A good bet to when human avatar based gameplay will be introduced in Eve-O is after WoD has been released.

But, if our lives all revolve around EVE, then we'd have to play second EVE and that doesn't exist... o_O

Human avatar based gameplay has already been introduced to the Eve-O universe. It's called Dust, and by all accounts it works pretty nice.

Here's the thing. The different graphic engines only apply to the clients. The server doesn't use any graphics, so the server doesn't need to cater to different graphic engines.

And there's been made a big deal out of merging Eve and Dust of late. So, on the server-side, human based avatar gameplay already exists.

I know the actual servers are different, but data is shared among tranquility and whatever the dust server is called. So, the two servers can communicate and share data. It seems trivial to me to make it so that human avatar data is exchanged as well.

The dust servers do the human avatar gameplay. The eve server does the flying in space thing.

It's all a matter of slushing players between the two servers.

And graphically, it's all handled by the client anyway.

After reading this thread, I decided to check it out for myself.

I thought this was pretty ingenius on CCP's part!

I already got my dropsuit avatar with hovering Drone pet.

I will be standing in the center of the "Mall" and advertise DUST.

You guys should ALL DO THE SAME! More people interested in DUST 514, merrier we all are!

Is Incarna toxic? I always had the impression it was monocle-gate that was the real complaint and that was geared more toward the 'real money for virtual goods' side of things. Would the players have reacted less outraged if it was £60 for a shiny addition to a ship over a monocle for an avatar?

This is worth repeating.

If NeX store would have had MT mods or ships, all of EVE would have rioted and not just a bunch of OCD nerds.

Riots were not against WiS, but against the MT crap. Of course WiS team failed to deliver on a grand scale, and game balance had been neglected, but EVE populace is not against WiS as an idea.

That said, I don't think CCP can deliver any major features with it's current resources earmarked for EVE Online.

Yeah, but Carbon graphics look impressive and DUST graphics look like a PC game from 2005 running on a cheap (720P) monitor with textures set to low.
