A n00b question that only a n00b could ask...

As I putter about in my new Rookie spacecraft (It's like driving around in a suped up Ford Pinto, eh?) I was looking for an acceleration gate for a mission. I had four hours and 40 minutes to complete it (for extra cash bonus). I scoured an entire solar system looking for wreckage. With forty minutes left, I discovered that I needed to find the acceleration gate first, not the wreckage. So, I scoured the solar system and the overview menu for signs of such a facility. Then, as I went back through tutorials and mission details, I saw that I was looking for a place to "Warp to Location" from. With 20 minutes left, I found a link in the Mission Drop Down Box. It was in tiny faded lettering. It said, "Warp to Location". I accomplished the mission and got the bonus!

And now my question. In all of that solar system scouring I did, I noticed some canisters floating about. I even saw a few unattended drones just floating about. Are those random spawns of resources you can pick up, or did someone leave them lying around? I wanted to pick them up, but I din't want to get accused of being a thief (yet) by mistake.

They were left by players, drones you can pick up but cans that aren't your will make you a target for everyone.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post

They were left by others. Be careful about taking stuff that isn't yours though. It will flag you as a suspect, allowing any one who sees you to open fire without concord intervention.

In the other hand, if you want to shoot at people go ahead and bait them.

Just to add to what others said, and as I'm a fellow newbie take it with a grain of salt, but containers left by other's that could get you flagged for killing by others without Concord intervention, these will be coloured yellow and you will be unable to open them unless you adjust your Security settings, that I assume is done to support those of us that didn't know these things!

Drones you can scoop to drone bay or cargo without any consequences. Often people will ask in local first if someone forgot them, and then if there is no reply you dont have to feel "bad" about keeping them.

Some of the cans you saw were most likely jet cans, which will have a different color depending on weather or not it belongs to someone else (yellow), belongs to you (white), or is abandoned (blue).
The same colors will go with wrecks.
Yellow - If you pick it up you will become flagged for a certain amount of time (15 minutes?) and they can blow you up.
White - Its yours, do what you want with it.
Blue - Someone left it there and set it so anyone could pick it up without consequences for you.

You might also have seen come secure containers, which will most likely have been anchored in space. People use these for various reasons.
Either to write messages in space with (say a recruitment ad and leave the can at a gate or outside a station), or to mine in high sec without having to worry about hauling (not sure if anyone still does this after the changes tho).

Basically if you want to avoid accidents, keep your safety settings to green and you should be able to avoid doing something that can accidentally get you into a position you did not intend to be in Smile

Edit - Guess its worth mentioning that you can salvage a wreck without getting flagged, and even if you play by the rules you can get blown up, even above 0.4 Lol

Thanks for your replies. You all gave some really good information. I really didn't expect that I was so close to getting blown away. I'm glad that I refrained from picking them up!

Unless you manually changed your security system from green to amber or red nothing would have happened.

CCP added the security function last winter to prevent accidental flagging (to some annoyance to older characters like me who think CCP is dumbing down EVE to suit stupid people).

So, as a new player with zero context as to the reason behind the change, I'm guessing you are suggesting that new players are just stupid people who need the experience dumbed down in order to make it more accessible (not enjoyable, just accessible) because we are just so stupid for not knowing this 10 minutes into the tutorial.

Yeah, sounds about right. I'm so sorry CCP has figuratively shrunken your epeen. Must be hard getting through life with the odds stacked against you like that.

I can also see how that change would completely ruin an older player's experience. There's so little to do, I can't imagine what you'd pay a subscription for without being able to gank unsuspecting players in order to teach them a good lesson about learning how to play.

HOW DARE THOSE NEW PEOPLE come along in their new ships and no knowledge into YOUR GAME THAT YOU SPENT SO LONG PLAYING and try to do anything without threat of ganking.

Yet you've offered good suggestions to me in my earlier Corp Suggestions thread.

The game was fine for 9+ years without anything to keep you from doing something that would get you blown up in hisec. Then they added the security buttons (green, amber, red) to keep you from leeroy-ing yourself or something. Not really sure what the point was, although it was an easy fix for the older players (i.e. set to red, continue on with life as normal).

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

I'm not saying that every new player is stupid, never said that new players are all stupid or that there are no old people who are stupid. I'm saying that the safety is made by CCP so that those who are stupid can't make mistakes of picking something from a yellow container anymore. They have to rely on CCP to help them instead of learning from their own mistakes.

You are:

Stupid and deserve to be ganked. Do your research before your whining rage posts. A quick search will see that I'm not a new player killer, actually the opposite.

A very very fail troll.

This.

Instead of making people learn about aggro mechanics, CCP is holding their hand now. And thus only delaying the thing that will happen to them, blowing up because they made a (stupid) mistake

while the safety button is really stupid and unEVEy, the aggression mechanics overhaul was a step in the right direction imo. the new mechanics are still kind of clunky but the old ones were a complete disaster.

I should buy an Ishtar.

You're the guy looking for a mature corp with no "trolls"?....I hope that's an alt posting character for your sake. Those safeties don't effect my ability to kill at will anywhere. All they do is make it harder for you to do anything about it when it's set to green. Does that green setting prevent LE flags?...I'm sure our hairless friend here would love to know too...

I don't have a problem with this at all. You're reading me wrong. If I get ganked, I get ganked.

What I have a problem with is the namecalling. It's not necessary, and it smacks of pseudo bravery behind a mouse, keyboard, and monitor. There's just no legitimate reason to deride someone because its their first time playing.

CCP made the decision. Did legions of new players petitioned to have this aspect of the game removed, and CCP caved? Maybe they did, I don't know - it is after all my first day.

But these internet muscles irritate the **** out of me. It's just another excuse for judging someone else because they are not "like you". It simply isn't necessary.

Anyway, back to the topic, this is a full PVP game, and High-sec and Concord are not really "protection." Concord will show up and destroy someone who attacks you for no reason, but you're still dead in most cases before Concord has a chance to do anything.

You should, at some point, read the evelopedia or other wikis for the rules about combat in high-sec, low-sec, and 0.0 space, because it's a PVP game and players actively attack each other for fun.

Also, a lot of the help and guides are in player forums / outside sites, so google is your friend. Feel free to search, there are excellent guides out there. CCP has set up the game a bit like an online chess website; if you're there it's expected that you know the rules of chess and how to move pieces, so they don't bother explaining much. But some of the players may.

I said the security system was implemented to protect the stupid.

You took that as a personal attack.
