I am most certainly not amused about this update.

I agree. I started during Apocrypha and have played at least for a bit during every new expansion since. I remember every login screen and every background theme associated with them fondly. The amount of atmosphere they added is clearly undervalued by CCP.

A good point about new players and the atmosphere that the login screen helped to create. My computer at this point is so saturated with Eve material that it hardly matters. In fact I took down the cable wire going to the house the other day and just run things off of the virtual fluid router on this machine.

As for favorite opening, Probably Incursion. That was just creepy and I always wondered what it looked like inside the Sansha station.

No, that would be over here.

On another note, CCP_Explorer has confirmed no more in-game login screens:

If CCP doesn't cave in here and pull this change, then we have effectively lost the power of voice as a community with them.

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

Perhaps not quite as powerful, but you accept it because it's the norm these days, much like credits playing over the top of the first 5 minutes of a movie.

When the first thing you see is the launcher, followed by UI, followed by character stuff, followed by more UI, and then you're suddenly dropped into the game? It's a disjointed experience that leaves you wondering what you just logged into.

Strongly agree with this. Being tossed from a launcher outside the game into the character selection screeen just cheapens the experience. The login screen set the mood, and change between login screens twice a year helped keep the game feeling fresh. Now, being dumped into character select screen at login totally removes all that from the picture. Major loss to the feel of the experience in entering the game. It has to be impressive, and it was. Now it's just weak and unimpressive.

What's more, with the removal of the Log Off button, EVE went back into 1990s. I'm sorry, but in an MMO with multiple characters, having to exit the game completely just to switch between characters on the same account is INCREDIBLY weak. Look at MMOs from 2004 and even earlier, and they had the ability to log off without exiting, This only exacerbates the many problems EVE has in this general area - like the player's inability to adjust the font, or change the font size in any significant way, and many others. Just makes the game feel really even more outdated than it has to be.

Eve's iconic login screens have always made my days logging in an enjoyable experience. Eve's animated login really offers players very unique ominous and charismatic depth no other game has matched.

The new launcher login seems dry and uninspiring by comparison. Tis' a sad day when the fully animated login screen is rendered obsolete for a "technological improvement"

If you noticed, in the last years at CCP they are working hard at devastating their game, to make it dumb, BAD, to look like a cheap Korean Flash game and to remove useful and even advanced features.

Today the process took a new step to that end.

The only thing that never gets reduced in EvE is the subscription price. That one, no, it won't drop to be like a B class Korean game.

Not enough coffee yet to be appropriately snarky.

-1 on this change. Like the Jukebox vanishing, this is just another change that seems to suck the soul out of the game.

On top of a couple of other reasons, I have been losing my enthusiasm for even logging in recently, and have been enjoying playing Civilization V more than EVE lately. This doesn't help matters.

These radical changes to the very heart of EVE, sorry, not changes, but eliminations, are making it into a less immersive, vivid experience.

(sarcasm) Why do we need our pretty graphics ? We could still play if all we see is a marker for our ship. Who needs to see their actual ships ? Roll

This is a bad move CCP, and just what I expected when you crawled under the covers with Sony, tbh.

Well, some CSM said that now t it would be easier to shift characters or something. Question

You know, well conceived shops have a "cool down" spot by the door. People will get into the shop at street walking pace and will be oblivious to almost anything you put in their way until they slow down and mentally shift to "shop mode". Actually, demanding their attention in that phase makes them uncomfortable and prone to choose shops that won't bother them while they're "getting in". This is not bullshit, it's the fruit of 50 years of analyzing customer behavior.

Yet MMOs know better and they just hope you will jump into their product with a lame launcher that does anything but launch the game when you hit it, rather will make you wait while it does some other **** like updating or whatever. Then, once the launcher stops doing its lame launcher stuff and you eventually are allowed to play, some games will let you sink into them (FAI, with a nice character pick up screen) and others will unceremoniously throw you inside.

I hope CCP makes a cool character selection screen, maybe like the race/gender screen from character creator. Such a character selection screen would display your characters as clickable portraits on top of their full avatars, waiting to be picked and get into the game. THEN, it would be great that the background of such "cool down" character selection screen was an animated scene (*hint, hint*) and some expansion-themed background music played... Blink

I will miss the login screen dearly. It was always something to look forward to the new ones. Launchers are soulless.

That being said, I'll get over it.

However you have now made it a whole lot more difficult for me to switch characters, which is really fuckiing annoying. Why?

CCP has never heard of "if it isn't broken don't fix it".

I mean why did they actually do this? Soley to annoy people?

Ain't that a fact.

Although one doesn't 'login' to Civ, it plays some terrific music and displays various historical pictures that change when starting up.

With this change, we just sort of get drop-kicked suddenly from reality into our hangar.

Very much this. New loading screens and music have honestly been one of my favorite things to get excited about when new expansions hit. Which sounds absolutely ridiculous. But it's true. It's one of those "little" things that just help really set the tone of the game.

Feature changes. Ship balancing. Maybe your favorite gun got nerfed. None of that matters when you're at the expansion's new login screen. For perhaps just that brief moment, everything in the game is new and exciting again. Your senses are overcome by something you have truly never experienced before, and it makes you excited to click that "Connect" button.

It's supposed to be a first step towards easier character switching, so they made it more difficult to switch characters

It would be nice if they made it possible to have multi-account login with the option to load a particular characters directly into the game. The character select is just one more additional layer of load time.
