H.G. Wells and the Sleepers (Spoilers)

In a continued effort to experience the 'classics' I recently began reading some of the older science fiction novels. I then came upon an intriguing story by H.G. Wells entitled 'When the Sleeper Wakes.'

It depicts an insomniac man, known to the reader only as 'Graham,' using drugs to cure his condition but instead falls into a 230 year long sleep, his body preserved and his inherited wealth being kept in trust. When he does awaken centuries later he finds the world completely changed, his incredible wealth increased by the machinations of a group, the White Council, to gain increased political power and control over the world. He himself used as a silent figurehead and propaganda tool to control the impoverished working class.

'Graham' slowly uncovers various plots and intrigues in this dystopian future world that lead to rebellion against the established order and a grab for power by a charismatic leader who's true motives are kept hidden.

As I'm sure you are already doing now, I couldn't help but draw parallels between this story and the 'Sleepers' featured within EVE Online. A Group of people that enter stasis and leave their wealth of knowledge and technology in trust. Which is then used by others to remain above the lower class and prevent them from rising too high.

But I'm in doubt as to who plays what role. Are the Enheduanni the controlling and manipulative Council? The Jove the rebelling working class? Are the younger Empires and Capsuleers just tools in this struggle or an unexpected anomaly? Where does the 'Other' fit into things, is this just a part of it's scheme?

If anyone else has read this book and wishes to share their perspective on events then please fell free to post and discuss them...

I'm Naomi Hale and this is my favourite thread on the forums.

hmm I might have to get that book and have a gander lol Big smile

but u mentiond about rebelling, personally the part u mentioned about the jove being the working class rebelling I also come to that conclusion when I read about the original architects who by the sound of it once drone/human then evolved into humanoids by there human creators for a more appeasing look, they were given a reproductive system for their long journeys making jump gates to survive, then the church condemning these creatures as they are not human so they are then split the older sleepers/architects can reproduce the new bread of them can not,
