How good is the Megathron for Small gang Pv?

I'm thinking of taking one out; are they any good in small groups/with support? Any good fits?

The pie is a tautology

Megathron like all sub capital gallente ships have loads of issues as it is.
I've had some moderate success with this fit but it too suffers from "close range" having being moved to 40km's some years a go.
That being said there are far better ships for "close range brawls" and this fit is also as tight as it gets without fitting implants, upcoming hybrid buff will likely change things how ever.

I don't mean to be snide, but I can't EVER see a situation where a t1 disruptor fit rail Megathron is halfway decent at anything. Especially with a co-proc? There's gotta be a better way to squeeze stuff on.

Anyway, OP, I'm no expert on Gallente fittings, but the general problem with the Mega is that the current metagame is 'kiting', usually defined as combat at 20k+ where no one is commited to the fit (webbed/scrammed) and thus can disengage to avoid blobs, etc.

However, in a small gang with support, the Mega can still shine. Your EFT DPS numbers, while hard to apply, are still very nice - and in a properly made gang with good tackle, the Mega will be able to apply that DPS. Fit with blasters, MWD, dual webs, and as many magstabs you can fit on with buffer - and anyone that your gang tackle successfully will feel the hurt. With a TE or two and null your range isn't terrible, so you can apply DPS on primaries without a significant delay if they're not too far apart. Save the rails for nullsec fleets, where you'll probably want something else anyway.

Summary: while the current metagame doens't play to the Mega's strengths, if you utilize it properly and recognize its weaknesses it can still be potent. Stations and gates are your friends, unless you've got good tackle in the gang that can lock people down for you to bring the hurt. Don't try to shoehorn your mega into roles it isn't good at, but if you embrace what it can do, you'll have plenty of fun.

Actually while writing this post I thought of a Mega fit I'd like to try, I'll have to see how it works... now off to put large blaster spec in queue!

Buffer tanked blaster megathrons are very effective in highsec because combat almost always occurs on a station undock or stargate, or you're provided with a warpin that lands you right on top of the other guys.

Fighting at zero range on a station undock sucks, nobody has fun doing it, except for the guy in a megathon who's fantastic tracking and huge DPS means he can melt face at point blank while everyone else is bumping off the station trying to get to a reasonable engagement range.

You have your choice of two [general] fits for the Mega...

[Megathron - ArmorBrawler]

[Lows]
Damage Control II
Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Adaptive Nano Membrane II
1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I

[Mids]
Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I (400 charges)
Quad LiF Fueled I Booster Rockets
Warp Scrambler II
Stasis Webbifier II

[Highs]
Neutron Blaster Cannon II (Antimatter)
Neutron Blaster Cannon II (Antimatter)
Neutron Blaster Cannon II (Antimatter)
Neutron Blaster Cannon II (Antimatter)
Neutron Blaster Cannon II (Antimatter)
Neutron Blaster Cannon II (Antimatter)
Neutron Blaster Cannon II (Antimatter)
Medium Unstable Energy Fluctuator I

[Rigs]
Large Trimark Armor Pump I
Large Trimark Armor Pump I
Large Trimark Armor Pump I

[Drones]
5x Warrior II
3x Ogre II
2x Hammerhead II

Notes: Cap lasts about 4 minutes with the MWD off, deals ~850 DPS, and has ~100k EHP. If you prefer more tank you CAN toss one of the MagField Stabs in favor of one more plate and/or EANM. Use Meta 4 equipment if you cannot use T2.

Tactics: get into range (~4 to 5 km) fast and quick by PULSING your MWD... have your guns overloaded to kill your target as quickly as possible to compensate for your relatively meager tank.

[Rigs]
Large Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I
Larger Core Defense Field Extender I
Larger Core Defense Field Extender I

[Drones]
5x Warrior II
3x Berserker II
2x Valkyrie II

Notes: Cap lasts about 4 minutes with the MWD off, deals ~950 DPS, and has ~65k EHP. Use Meta 4 equipment if you cannot use T2.

Tactics: you're pretty much a glass tank that can lay some significant hurt on things well out to ~40 km with Null Ammo. Keep your guns overloaded and kite your target (to the best of your ability). Alternatively, you can load up some faction antimatter ammo and go blazing in with massive DPS.
If you have concerns about your ability to soak up damage though... I point you towards the Hyperion as it can use this fit MUCH better than the Megathron can.

No offence but the real advice people should be giving to the OP is don't start your PvP experiments in a BS. You are going to lose ships, period. If you think you are going to listen to advice, pick a good fit, be carefull and a single ship will survive any length of time, you are going to be sadly mistaken.

Expect to lose your ship every second engagement. Remember the OP is asking about small gang warfare before anyone starts flaming that statement. You have to have the attitude and Isk generation ability to be able to treat the ships you fly as throw away items. For most new players that means Frigates, then T1 Cruisers and then T1 BCs - these are still the most common small gang vessels. After that people graduate to HACs or Interdictors/Recons or T2 Frigates or very occassionally Battleships. But these are often for one or two treat battles before returning to the more affordable Cane or Harbinger. It will be at least a year down the line before the OP is ready to undock a BS and by then, 2 or 3 patches will have been and gone and everything will have changed.
