If so then why does it have a character limit? I am thinking it's saved server side or why else would it matter.

it would also be cool go to a station with a jump clone there and see your self in a spare pod or something :P better yet have the jump clone walking around :P if that was real? you could self p...... wait thats rude not saying that.....
