Does the new system scanner feature finally pave way for a submarine EVE Online & death of Local

Well, we've all seen the new system scanner. We all know that it is WIP and is still being tweaked before the next expansion release.

As someone who've been hoping for instant intel local to die and instead have a much improved way of finding ships (in a cat-and-mouse way of speaking) along with a system that takes ship signature radius into account this development is almost like a gift sent from heaven.

If the directional scanner were to get a similar facelift and if ship propulsion and ship capturing methods were updated as well along with CCP's current stance regarding local (even thought they've been silent about it for ages now) I gamble on that the days of the instant intel local channel may soon be reaching it's end.

My simple reasoning is that the new system scanner shows just how incredibly intuitive scanning can be and if pushed further it could make the ship cat-and-mouse game something quite spectacular. The other bonus is still that we may slowly move away from having to fight at pre-determined positions all the time such as stations and gates. But again, this would still require an update to how we fly and catch ships. Not that impossible now that we've actually seen how things can change, right?

A first step could be linking the directional scanner to an active overlay, automatically refreshing the directional scan every few ticks, around every fully circle the overlay goes.

Next could be a display of the ships in approximate position like the signatures, though things may get cluttered really quick.

Sounds like an interesting idea if it makes the gameplay more exciting and intuitive.

I think it is a ways off yet, but this does appear as though it could be a forward step. If they do go down that path, hopefully they further the sub analogy with active versus passive scans. Active being a ping and passive just picking up 'noise'.

The passive would be a more stealthy but inaccurate method, where as active would give more precise data, but at the cost of letting everyone know where you are.

Section three, of this doc, has that sort of idea. It's a bit dated but remains mostly true: http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/AdunhSlavy/RSIV611.htm

Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.  - William Pitt

Personally I have always wanted a active and passive mode dscan.

Active mode being a single or continues sweep of the area. Showing everyone nearby and their approximate position, but also revealing yourself to everyone else.

Passive mode only able to detect ships using the active dscan.

And then.. The removal of local chat.

Granted, if the scanner consolidates blobs on a grid into one large icon and ignores fleet members to lessen blutter unless you tell it not to, you naughty naughty girl

I endorse these ideas and general thinking.
Local chat is in my opinion too easy to gain intel on your surroundings and I feel like it takes away a part that for instance wormhole space does give you, that sense of the unknown and possible danger.

I hope one day this will be implemented, however as previously stated, it'll take time before we'll get there.

There was this thread Hiding in Eve - Why we cloak some time ago that presented some very nice ideas along these lines. We can only wish.

That could cause a lot of server stress but it could be a cool way to finally remove local.

Yes, it would be great if we could do away with the dumb directional scan button spamming (without even a hotkey, thankyouverymuch CCP) and had some kind of visual information overlay instead. But frankly, I just don't think they can do it. It requires a TON of work, and worst of all it has to be done gracefully and be very intuitive, or it'll harm the game much more than it'll help, the way the new UI did when it was launched in its new-and-busted state. Frankly I don't ever see it happening, as it is more than likely they will slowly re-focus development on WoD over EVE. I mean, let's face it, we haven't been getting amazing expansions like Trinity or Apocrypha since they started on Dust and WoD. The last two years have been bland fixes for the most part. Two heavily FW-focused expansions, but FW is still as broken as it ever was.

Bottom line, with the speed the things are moving, I wouldn't count on any submarine-like systems, not in many, many years, even though I would love to have one. It is just simply beyond their ability right now to implement a polished version of something like that, and an unpolished version has the potential to fully wreck the game and they'll never risk that.
