Blue Wrecks and teh CONCORD

I have a funny story to tell, it starts with a Retriever wreck, suicide ganked by somebody else. The wreck was yellow, and the icon was filled, meaning it had something in it. I swooped in turning my safety off to inspect the contents for shinies. Alas, no shinies.

I'd been through a few systems salvaging in a cheap Navitas, armed with blasters for defence against rats. A ship not intended for PvP, with the sole purpose of making a quick profit by salvaging belts. So after inspecting the wreckage and determining there was nothing shiny enough to warrant going suspect, I warped to the next belt.

I locked up the first wreck, and the second one, both blues, and pushed F2, my salvager, and got what I could from the first one. I moved to the second, and pushed F2... except it wasn't F2, it was F1. My safety was still off.

BZZZZZT

"Oh, woops," I thought, and awaited the inevitable.

I got CONCORDED for accidentally firing on a blue wreck. The moral of the story is, don't fire on blue wrecks.

I'm not upset. It was a minor loss of a really cheap ship. It was pretty damn funny. My corp is still teasing me over Mumble as I write this. For me, though, it's an ice breaker as well, because I was considering getting into a suicide gank Catalyst for weeks now, and something's been holding me back. I think this was it, because I'm fitting up a Cat right now.

On the other hand, while I knew firing on a yellow would get you concorded.... a blue? That doesn't make sense to me. If someone can explain it, I'm all ears. I'm not petitioning the loss, it's not worth it. And these aren't tears, anyone in my corp can tell you we are all enjoying the hilarity of the situation.

Especially my second loss... for my first criminal experience and not realising that when you have a criminal flag, concord will get you as long as you are in a ship, so undocking with a criminal flag in another ship would be unwise. Yeah... I did that too :p fortunately, it was just another navitas to go and loot/salvage the first one I lost. After the crim tag expired, I had a third one on standby to go get both, which I've done.

So yeah, we all find it quite funny, we're just confused about how firing on an abandoned wreck constitutes a criminal offence.

Because it's a funny story. And I'm trying to get some clarity on the issue of abandoned wrecks. If it's abandoned, it's alright to loot it without going suspect yeah? So how does firing on it make you a criminal?

I can shoot a white wreck in high sec without the same problem.

safety to yellow will let you loot wrecks without risk of concord in the future

yeah blue wrecks maintaina degree of ownership for some reason vOv always have, and you're not the first to get concorded for it

So that you would have an opportunity to test out your new found teen-age sarcasm.

I don't like this. I routinely shoot wrecks out of habit. I guess it stems from my wormhole days and not wanting to alert people to activity in an anom (or belt/plex).

I will have to leave my safety on yellow if I ever go back to highsec.

Thanks for the advice about the safety. I already knew this, but I'm used to just going straight to "off" for low-sec roams. I'll keep it in mind from now on.

If you fire on your own wreaks there's no problem because they're tagged as belonging to you.

But a blue wreak won't be tagged as belonging to you.

Yes..... for the same reason you can shoot a corpmate, in highsec.

(i've never bothered going anything but yellow in lowsec, either - yellow lets you shoot anything except pods, and the safety doesn't even work in null)

e: ah, but turn it to red if you fly logistics!

Interesting thing happened when I was fighting a frig vs frig fight in highsec once, they were suspect flagged at the start of the fight, I was getting low on structure so I disengaged and start running out of his/her range (coward I know) Big smile However I continued to shoot at his/her drones and had my drones on him/her, and then I saw he/she was now struggling with cap and running low on shield him/herself.

Seeing the fight was soon to swing in my favour I got back into range and started shooting, suddenly I'm sitting in my pod, ******* concord had spawned and decided to gank me... Yes my safety was on, yes this person was still flagged to me, no clue as to what happened, they had no idea either...

Had that happen once to me when I started.
Friend and I are busy fighting an enemy, Im in a blackbird he is in a tengu, Suddenly navy spawn and we both lose ships he gets podded for his troubles.
He got refunded I didnt.
Best bet is that your timer ticked off in between your firing and the server registering hit, thus it thought you fired on a neutral.
(Go into a high tidi enviroment and watch the firing then the impact messages, they are actually taking place over 3 ticks, one for order, one for impact, final for message relay) (also a good way to get past camps as they take ~1.5 seconds to scram you even with instalocks)

This is why you fly on yellow safety in highsec, except when planning a suicide gank.

if you shoot a white wreck while on a missions fleet concord will kill you if your mate was not in your corp.

so don't shoot white wrecks either, I lost a fully navy fitted CNS for that.... and no got no reimbursement as expected.
