The first and last person who actually made something of a CSM title was The Mittani during CSM6. He carried the title Chairman.

There's little argument that can made that he was not the leader of that motley crew. That he was not steering that ship from start to finish. He brought gravitas to the title. Any communication that came out of CSM6 was filtered through the chairman. Anything we heard from CSM6 was Mittens approved.

The Mittani was only person to bring meaning to a title up until that point, the only person to do it since.

There are no actual responsibilities codified into the titles. Whoever carries them makes of them what they will. Since the titles carry no official weight within the Council, it takes a real leader to transform them into anything that has meat and meaning.

If anything, CSM7 washed any meaning in those titles completely down the drain. They had a chairman who was absent for a good part of the year, and who showed a complete lack of any sort of leadership. CSM7 members did what they wanted, when they wanted. Which is fine, and worked to their benefit to some degree, but it certainly showed the Chairman title to be an empty vessel. And then CSM7 had a Secretary who was one of the least communicative of the hard-working members. He certainly took no leadership role in crafting CSM documents such as the Summit Reports. In some instances, the Secretary had the least amount of input in official CSM communications. Again, showing the title as nothing more than a adjective in front of name. A feather in one's cap. A ceremonial badge.

Of the CSM7 Chairman and the CSM7 Secretary, you can give them both passing grades on the work they did during their terms as representatives, but neither of them brought anything to the titles they carried.

Now we have CSM8. There's no greater confirmation on the meaninglessness of CSM titles when every nullsec bloc candidate gives their collective "Meh" when the position of Chairman comes up for debate and internal election. The voting was over after a single round. The fellow who coveted the title most was given that title with a shrug. He now gets to round-out his lengthy CSM resumé, filling that void with what amounts to nothing more than a void. Certainly few CSM8 representatives are going to rally around their new Chairman. He's exhibited no leadership qualities up until now, and many of his ideas are have been actively scoffed at by the nullsec blocs.

My one disappointment is that Ripard Teg made a run at the CSM8 Chairman title. I figured, if any of the new CSM knew of the pointlessness of titles, it would be Ripard. And if in the back of his head, he thought he could bring back respect and meaning to the title, the way that The Mittani did, then he was kidding himself. I like Ripard, am glad he's on CSM8, but his personality is no force of nature.

I wrote the following two weeks ago, concerning titles:
Quote:
Chairman. Vice-chairman. Secretary. Vice-secretary. These CSM titles mean nothing. They confer no privilege or role upon the recipient. About the only thing they're good for is creating a little drama at the start of a CSM session among the newly elected representatives. You have one person who gets a title, and another person who's ticked off that nobody (or not enough people) voted for them.

Drop the titles. Get to work. The titles, they're just head inflation devices. And some of the representatives have already been shopping at the Big Hat Warehouse for too long already.

About all titles offer now are ego boosts to those that hold the titles. People who will quickly add Chairman or Secretary to their forum signatures, hoping it conveys some level of authority or importance upon their position on the Council. When in reality, the title confers them no special privileges over any of their peers.

Hopefully a few CSM8 representatives will push for some further changes to the CSM White Paper, remove these pointless bits of fluff, let the representatives concentrate on the job at hand right from day one, rather than internally campaigning on some bit of self-importance.

Except, as I specifically pointed out ... I made this argument before CSM8 had officially taken office, and well before they voted on their positions. At the time I wrote my original comment on titles, the popular opinion was that the chairman's seat would go to Mynnna.

Nice try, though.

I don't see how this vote has created "drama at the start" when by all accounts it was pretty straight forward. I don't disagree that the titles may not have a huge meaning, but that doesn't mean they need to be done away with.

And this part:
Quote:

This shows that Alek is in part right. You don't approve of the chairman (even though he was the best match for you on votematch), and despite all the denying of that, people are going to read it that way.

Even if the titles are just meaningless ego boosts, it gives a structure to the CSM more than just "Here's 14 people. Herd them CCP, and good luck."

Don't pin this one on the CFC, this little bit of "Let me tell you in great detail how I totally don't care that Trebor won" idiocy is Poetic's and Poetic's alone.

Structure that isn't codified is not structure at all.

Quote:
Officers do not have special powers, only additional responsibilities. The responsibilities of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman are to handle official communications between the CSM and CCP, and they are expected to be particularly active in interacting with the community. The responsibilities of the Secretary and Vice-Secretary are related to the production of official CSM publications such as the CSM Summit Minutes.

Internal structure does not always have to be something you can see, especially when you aren't on the CSM. The actual role of the Chair and Vice Chair is there for all to see in the white paper. They handle the offical communication between CCP and the CSM. I've also included the Secretary and Vice-Secretary's roles in that quote as well.

Even if you remove the Vice Chair, Secretary and Vice Secretary someone would have to act in a Chairman's role for the sake of "Official Communication." That's the point of the role, not to lord it over the other CSM members and the player base, but to give structure to the CSM in dealings with CCP.

Not just CCP, CCP *and* the players.

Unfortunately for the CFC when ever Poetic now goes on one of his little rants it will always be viewed as CFC propaganda from here on in, rightly or wrongly.

Yes, you have a crush on Trebor (Especially now where you can't have one on Hans), but do you really have to shout it out at every oppoortunity?

So us, as quoted above, my job was to organize the summit minutes, which I did, both times. Trebor did help with a lot of the editing and organization, but I was the one that bugged people to finish their minutes, in addition to many, many editing passes.

If anyone believes that Poetic's blog is suddenly going to be "CFC propaganda" simply because he joined a CFC alliance, they're beyond hope. Can't make it any simpler than that.

arh.. gotcha

However both me, you and a lot other other people know that this will be the case.

Again not saying that it is right or wrong but it is the price Poetic will have pay, whether he gives a damn is another matter.
