Min gfx card for max settings?

I am currently running:
32bit debian
amd 4850e dual core
8 BG memory
1x 8800gt
2x 24" monitor (each 1920x1200)

Running 1 or 2 clients at low details is ok, but 3 gets a bit troublesome, so I am starting to think about upgrading.
This will probably be something like:
64bit linux
amd 8350
a newer asus 990fx motherboard
at least 2 GB per client

But the big question will be
What kind of nvidia gfx card will run a 24"(1920x1200) monitor at max details?
And a 30"(2560x1600) monitor?
I am thinking of a gfx card per monitor.

It's hard to give you a definite answer, as even relatively beefy cards will struggle with bigger fleet encounters at maximum settings (especially with AA and HDR) wheras derping around solo and in small gangs will be no problem even on a weaker card. Heck, even my old 260 didn't have any performance issues outside of fleets (except the stupid clouds).

I would not aim lower than a 650 ti.

32 bit OS vs 8GB Ram + Good Grapics card is a bottle-neck in the first place, so upgrading to 64bit will help.

On the GPU i'd agree with Neuntausend

Care to back up your claim with some supporting facts? Please also take into account that the eve client isn't optimized for 64-bit processors due to it being a 32bit application.

32bit linux can handle 8GB through some kernel shenanigans, and with 3 clients I haven't seen any swapping. The performance bottleneck I have is probably a combination of an old gfx card and a processor with just 2 cores. A core per client, plus an extra one for the OS should probably help.

32bit systems can support max 4 gb ram and have some restriction - total ~3.2 gb available ram

32bit linux supports lots of memory though PAE : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension.
There is still a limit of 4GB per process though.

when the processor supports 64-bit mode to use pae - hmm ...

I currently use ATI 7950, works fine with max settings and 2560x1440 resolution. Didn't try running a second client though. Some time ago I used ATI 6870 which also worked fine till it died. Extra monitors are connected to ATI 7750, which also can handle max settings, but I didn't try running eve at high resolutions in this case.

As for 32/64bit issue, there are some other limits on 32bit platforms (like address space issue, smaller cpu registers and only 8 instead of 16 of them, which is very crucial for video processing, etc etc), but EVE is 32bit only so you can't do anything about that.

This.

Up to now I haven't seen any of my clients take 4GB of memory. It's your gfx card and CPU that are giving you the performance issues. I have 2 cores and running 1 client tends to already consumer more 1 core regardless of the GFX settings. Running 2 clients pretty much maxes out my CPU. Upgrading your CPU will already give you a performance boost, but to be able to also enjoy stellar GFX you should also consider upgrading your GPU. Switching to a 64-bit OS isn't going to give you anny noticeable performance increase for EVE. 64-bit OS can and will give you a performance increase for other applications that actually are 64bit. Depending on your distribution it will be easy or not to get 32bit compatibility, but most dsitro's these day's should be pretty easy and straight forward to get things working.

I run EVE on all high (except HDR) with the following and get a solid 60fps in Jita:

- Pentium G860
- nVidia GTX660
- 8GB DDR3

I'd say the GTX550/GTX660 is a good, solid card for EVE under wine.

Okidoki. There is a new 780 coming out at the end of the month, so that should give some price pressure on lower cards.
Thanks!
