Please help me find my Techné...

I'm a philosophy student, and techné seemed appropriate: "Techne, or techné, as distinguished from episteme, is etymologically derived from the Greek word τέχνη which is often translated as craftsmanship, craft, or art. It is the rational method involved in producing an object or accomplishing a goal or objective"

Anyhow, I'm a carebear. I'm peaceful and respectful, and I'm scared of losing my ship in pvp ;) so I've currently been mining in a Navitas (yawn) but have finally trained all the skills to pilot a Covetor, and have bought one. However I feel like I'm missing out on a lot when i sit in 0.9 space mining dense veldspar. I'm looking for something a bit more... stimulating, yet not something high risk like PVP.

I'm stuck in my current position, not sure what to do next. Where should I go from here as a miner? I'd prefer good enough income but nothing too risky (I deal badly with gankers :p). Or can you recommend any other career paths? I like exploration, and any kind of peaceful, relaxing means of ISK income. And I'd prefer not to do missions that entail things like go blow X up. Perhaps my name is inaccurate to my personality :p

I'd recommend exploration - it is good fun, can require very little or a lot of skills depending on what you do, can be somewhat dangerous and therefore exciting (depending on where you go) and can be extremely lucrative.

Is this scanning down sites and harvesting them?

Yes that's what he's talking about, to be honest probing down sites is a mini game that I quite enjoy. Have a look at this guide and see if it interests you.

There are gravametric sites with asteroids in them that you can mine, they're usually better rocks than regular highsec ones. But the main draw of exploring is other sites though, stuff like Radar and combat sites usually pay off decently well.

Personally, I like exploring. It's not just the same old thing all the time, but it's not horribly hard either.

Come check out Apogee Industrial. We can help you find your "techné". We are a group of experienced folk who will help you get the most out of your mining, and help you make the move into manufacturing if you desire. Or if trade is more your thing, well we can help you out there too. We do have some experience in exploration as well, albeit that's not our current focus. Won't mean we won't come join you on your escapades from time to time though.

Stop by our public channel and let's chat. "Apogee Public" is our public channel. Hope to hear from you!

You could try combat mining. The most valuable ore in hisec right now is Lyavite, which comes from some mining missions but is also abundant in the Incursion site "Nation Mining Colony". Mining this will require coordination with the combat fleets running the sites, and you will be risking your ship. If you can find a group to help you out, you'll effectively be making 3k ISK/m3 (1M ISK for 300m3)

That's just one suggestion :)

Exploration is, by far, the most fun and lucrative pacifist-activity. You can easily earn a good amount of ISK probing for sites and emptying them. And if you do it in a Battlecruiser, you can even run the combat-sites you find with little to no trouble and get a few good modules every now and then.

Thanks for all the replies, really helpful. If i were to start mining in slightly lower security space in my Covetor, would i just fend off rats using drones? If so can you recommend which drones I should get?

Not likely. In low-sec, the rats are often Battleships. Your drones can't take out a Battleship before 3 Battleships turn your Covetor into a wreck. You'll want to be ready to retreat and switch to a combat ship when rats show up.

What about 0.4 - 0.6?

0.5 and up you'll be fine if you have multiple drones. When you get 0.4 and lower, you have player pirates to worry about as well, and your drones won't be able to do much to them most likely.

0.4 is still low-sec. 0.5-1.0 is high-sec. I currently hang out a bit in 0.1, and the rats there are any type of ships. 0.4 may be slightly lighter on the fire-power, but I'm not 100% sure. And I don't know about 0.0 either.

Just some food for thought - why are you so scared of losing ships? If you have full platinum insurance, you can make back roughly 80% of the money invested in a ship upon getting blown up. Believe me, once you lose your first ship, you will not care about losing more. You may see yourself as a carebear who wants to only mine in peace, but believe me, there is a lot more to this game that is more enjoyable than mining. Im not trying to push you to be some bloodthirsty pirate, but please try buying a few ~300k isk rifters and fitting them out for blowing things up once and a while. I know you will probably just reply by saying "its my game, I play how I want," but try to take some risks here and there. The game can offer you so much more!
