Hello devs and forum dwellers.

I have been wondering in all sincerity what kind of background you need to work at your wonderful company. Your company is my all time favourite game developers. I was also pleased you purchased the White wolf (as I cannot stop playing WoD tabletop games and have been awaiting the WoD MMO since announcement).

I am close to complete my CEGEP (Quebec College) degree in computer programming with "Information Management" as my chosen specialty. I am looking forward to attend university soon to study video game development. If I can pass my french standard exam (Easier said than done for someone who's french is at the level of a second language).

I live near Montreal, Game Dev Mecca for many companies but upon becoming an adult ,you have become my favourite company. And as a longterm goal I wish develop a strong work ethic that is on par with your company's work culture. I know your company strives for innovation and taking risks, but I want to know what makes a CCP programmer tick.

Any tips for a would be game programmer?

EVE's drinking culture does strike me as heavy, but I imagine it's mostly driven by the playerbase, and the ratio of drinkers to non-drinkers at CCP probably reflects most first-world populations.

Alcoholism is a disease, and whether the majority of CCP employees are alcoholics is none of your business, and joking about it is quite rude.

just kidding. I think you're expected to have a great sense of humor but keep it a secret.

that I should worry about losing my hearing is nonsense, because there will always be -=BASS=-

Experience, experience, experience, experience, experience, experience, experience, developers!

Sorry caught in a moment of Balmerism.

Best advice i can give is the same advice i give to everyone, have a portfolio of work that is heavy on quality and goes back a long time so they can see progress.

Better yet, include mistakes so you can show your human qualities and ability to learn.

Id rather hire someone aware of their mistakes than Mr Perfect as his resume is probably bs.

Also dont gush in your cover letter, itd make me respect you less.

One important lessons for working in the game development industry

No one needs an "idea guy". Most people have 2-3 decent ideas for a game. People in the business probably have 10 good ideas each. What they need is people who can make ideas into games.

Writers and Sound technicians are two more fields that are not in very high demand in the industry.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

What people always assume in a portfolio is that the company wants tons of good grades, degrees and fluffy stuff (its very useful obviously) but they want someone to stand out. Don't try to be too fancy or perfect, brown nosing won't get you anywhere. Just be friendly, casual and show that you really want to put 120% into what you want to do.

Do you have any idea how colleges like Harvard or Yale recruit? There are hundreds of people with perfect SAT, EC's and grades, but they are all the same.

I think its easier for foreigners to get into American Universities these days, or at least that's what it looks like from my research. Carnegie seems to have been a total bro with his grants for Scots to study there anyway Big smile

From personal experience, making the interviewer laugh is always a good sign.

Oh and having some kind of connection to the place.

If you can prove that down the line Hilmar's ancestor marauded and stole your ancestor and made her his wife you should get bonus points.

It's alright, this classes as a written record so i can charge you commission P

Being Scottish, if you find a good enough genealogist you might be able to prove a link to most of CCP.

I don't want to work as a developer tbh. As a person working as technical support (teaching the elderly the intriciate working of the Windows Start-button ftw) for a multi-national corporation I'm way more interested in working in CCPs customer support. Smile

I wouldn't want to work as a developer period. No matter how much effort you put in, no matter how hard you try, you will never please the whiny, self centered, egotistical genital wart who can't see past their own ass that is the player base.
