Sometimes we end up debugging stuff that happens sporadically with no common thread and no logs. At those times I walk around with a limp and pretend I'm doctor House. QA doesn't like it much.

Personaly i think it's them pesky database guys playing silly buggers.

I can just picture them hiding behind a server cluster hiked up on cafeine and giggling like children.

The end-result is that the cluster tries to undock or fit a module to 'Bob' -- but Bob only looks like a ship, and doesn't have the code required to allow him to undock or fit a module.

Please don't plug that module in there...

I won't complain until I see a pilot hop out of his pod, stretch out his hand, and stop the storm of 800mm shells I'm firing at him.

Wait, so is CCP like the Matrix? That's some quantum shiat right there!

Mmm, I love the smell of pod goo in the morning.

I'd start with a quick scan of all the code to see where that field got referenced, and look for improper assignments everywhere it appears. Since you guys have been messing with C++, check pointers too. Pay close attention to assignments/if statements and make sure you aren't assigning a new value when you intended to do a lookup. Blink

Ok so, when my own ship unpods me and undocks on its own from a station, or, unpods me and drops me in the middle of space - time to run for the hills or too late ?

Ships are going to start podding their own pilots as revenge for all the abuse we make them go through.

P.S. The characters that we fixed in September were not all owned by themselves. Sometimes by somebody completely different. It's bizarre really (and only a little bit scary).

Let me guess. The characters that owned other players were all dirty dirty Amarr scum weren't they?

In that case, try finding the Caldari responsible for selling those.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation, Tuxford.

Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

The first rule of being a DBA:
Blame the application.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

Being both a programmer and DBA...99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the time it's the application's fault Blink

And the rest of the time it's sunspot activity. Big smile

Essentially, it's an unanticipated bug -- CCP simply never accounted for a situation in which the character might 'belong' to itself. .

is that like code becoming self-aware? if so, that is scary...

That is all.
