The New Turret Icons

Hi there,

With the new winter expansion getting closer I was wondering about what would happen to the new turret icons.

I for one, and many if not most others, actually like them and would really hate to see them replaced by the boring 2002 ones.

Thus, I wonder, will they actually be reverted now that the "full on ******" drama has subsided?

If the answer is unfortunately turns out to be yes, then can you at least make that optional?

As mentioned before a lot of people like them, and would actually like to see the other icons (armor reppers etc..) to get a touch of 2011 too.

So please, if nothing else let us have an option to keep the awesome new icons

Cheers

There is a difference between pictures and icons. Right now we have pictures, but I think most people want the ICONS back - even the old ones - as you can actually very easily tell the difference between a gun and a tractor beam. That is not the case right now.

I prefer the new ones too not that it'll matter to me any longer.

You will soon get used to the new icons, stop living in the past that's just plain lazy.

Plus if your mind has difficulty working it out, then you have a mouse pointer and tool tips.

It's not about living in the past or being lazy — it's about functionality and the fact that the new pictures do not fulfil the function of actual icons, unlike the old (actual) icons.

The old tractor beam icon told you “this is a module that attracts cargo cans” — the new tractor beam picture tells you “this is how some module you've fitted on your ship looks”. The former is useful information, the latter serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

…and that's before we even get into how poorly made the new pictures are and the general lack of accessibility awareness and UI design sensibilities they exhibit.

Would it be nice to have some spruced-up icons? Sure. As long as they're actually spruced-up icons, rather than the laziest and most pointless batch render job in recent history.

Wheter or not you like the pictures is besides the point. From a design perspective, the UI should be as clear and readable as possible. There are people with bad eyesight, people with color blindness etc that play EVE. The new turret models are absolutely awesome. The current so called icons however, are not icons, just pictures of the models. They are not pictograms like a true icons should be. As icons they are pure garbage, as they clutter the UI with unreadable microsopic mess. I see no reason why you would prefer to make the UI less user friendly from a design standpoint.

Shame there is no color coded background for them to be easily distinguished

There are good ships,

And wood ships,

And ships that sail the sea

But the best ships are Spaceships

This happened in Dark Age of Camelot, they decided to update and revamp all the icons, which was a nice idea, but they ended up putting in pretty pictures that had no relation to the old icons or what the represented, after a couple of weeks it turned out that everyone and their mom loved the look of the new items but had installed a mod to replace them with the originals.

I've always been an advvocate of plain and functional UI's, fancy graphics and pictures are just not needed, your main focus in any game should be on the main portion of the screen where everything happens not the UI, you should be able to glance at the UI quickly and see what is needed, not have to process pretty fluf.

Functionality will always win over fluf.

I've not found them any less user friendly.

You would not expect a tractor beam to fire projectiles for example, just like you would not expect a gun turret to pull things towards it.

…and that's why they're not user friendly: the old icons made the distinction you just described; the new ones do not. The tractor beam could just as well be some form of particularly snub-nosed blaster or a strip miner for all the pictures convey.

Ok, so how did they make that distinction, by the picture or tool tip.

If you're not sure by the picture you have the tool tip and failing that you can look at the info on the item. Once you get to know the pictures you would not have any problem anymore. You already know the old ones so you don't even need to think about those.

Can't check it out as this character is due to be reprocessed and the others already are and don't want to start the whole 10 hour thing again.

Having to use tool tips is not user friendly, nor does it make for good UI design. When it comes to UI, function must always triumph form. With the old icons you could tell at a glance what your were looking at. Thats why they are coming back.

If I could see them better, I'd say keep them.

I run Eve at 1920x1080 on a 23" monitor, and find it difficult to distinquish what looks like small piles of poo.

They really never should have been updated.

I did like the old icons, you knew where you stood, but I do like the new turrets, if they could find a balance between using the module pictures but adding some information to them I'd be happy

In the case of Railguns, I always thought the 75mm look a ton bigger and stronger than the 150mm, so going by eye isn't that easy until your use to them. I would love to see in the bottom left to have the mm size in small font.

yeah i would have liked new picture icons closer to thier models to been drawn. Also that the old icons be used in certain areas such as the Ship control UI, but remained with the pictures for things like thier blueprints.

Dust 514's CPM 1 Iron Wolf Saber Eve mail me about Dust 514 issues.

No kidding, but its their own damn fault.

They created this mess, and now they lack the balls to stand up to the spoiled monster they created.

Nothing gets balanced, since something would needs to get nerfed, and gosh some peoples feelings might be hurt...

Nearly everything new gets met with suspicion and hostility because people who complain about EVE being boring , are oftentimes the same people who go apeshit when something is about to change.

Same thing with these turret icons. They are FINE, everyone who passes as human can easily distinguish between them, and accurately so.

But not only are they clinging on to the outdated stuff they remember from the supposed good old days, they are again the same people who leave EVE because its stale.

And CCP, cowards that they are, are giving into the demands of a horde of ******* Eric Cartmans.

I wonder how that will turn out in the end? Let me watch into my crystal ball:

Ohh yeah, EVE is stale and people leave...

P.S.: I am at least asking for an option to retain the new stuff, leave those crybabies with their old toys, they'll be gone before you know it, but stop alienating those of us that embrace progress and those that only recently joined - only to find a game needlessly kept antiquated!

For those that have not adapted to the new 'icon' deserve a Darwin award.

Took about 1 week to be able to tel the difference at a quick glance. I hope they stay how they are and they improve missile 'icons' now.
